LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************

Dear Friends,

It's always been my tag line that I prefer animals to people, and a couple of weeks ago, I started feeling it more than ever. I *used to live* in a beautiful townhouse complex that was shaded by mature hardwood trees. There were six of them, spread down the sidewalk of my block, all oaks at least 25 feet high. In fact, the trees were the reason I chose to move into this complex in the first place.

Where do I live now? Oh, I still live here. But my trees have been murdered.

The first cut was the deepest. About five years ago, the management company took out the magnificent crabapple that I considered a dear friend. It was right outside my door, so my upstairs bedroom felt like being in a treehouse. I could look out the window and see the birds and squirrels going about their business. In the spring, it produced flowers of the prettiest pink-white I'd ever seen. In the fall, a troupe of cedar waxwings, with their perky crests and glossy brown feathers and yellow tails, would arrive to feast on whatever fruits were left before heading out for the winter. I looked forward to their arrival every year.

To me, it was heaven.

So what happened? Someone complained that the fruits (and the birds) made a mess. And one day, while I was at work, the management company killed it. I was devastated beyond words. Of course, this is a rental complex, so as seethingly angry as I was, there was nothing I could do. Man 1, Nature 0.

Well, what remained were the stately oak trees. Unfortunately, their roots were buckling the sidewalks. So not only did they take mine, but they took all six. Instead of fixing the problem at hand, they threw the baby out with the bathwater – all I know is, thankfully I was not around to see it happen this time either.  Man 2, Nature 0.

I was telling my friend at work that I liked that tree better than 90% of the people I know. The cardinals would come every spring and nest in my tree. The squirrels played here. The terrible allergies their catkins gave me in the spring were all worth it as far as I was concerned.

This whole incident reminded me of John’s big dust-up with first wife Annie over cutting down the trees at his Aspen home, how the trees were as much a part of the home as the house itself.  And believe me, I know exactly how he felt.  I grieved for days over those trees I loved.

So renew my faith in people, what say you?  Tell me good things about how you recycle and care for the environment.  And share with the rest of us (hint hint).

Thanks to all who sent something for this issue of the newsletter – much appreciated.  It’s a long one, so hold on tightly ;)  And – don’t forget to visit IAT on Facebook!

Ann

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
*********************************************************************

"...You're also turning the sky into mud. I look down, I don't believe the filth. You're using rivers for toilets. You're poisoning my fishes. You want a miracle? *You* make a fish from scratch. You can't. You think only God can make a tree? Try coming up with a mackerel. And when the last one is gone, that'll be that: eighty-six on the fishes, goodbye sky -- so long world -- over and out."

from “Oh, God!”,  God speaking to Jerry Landers.

 ------

"They took all the trees, put 'em in a tree museum.
And they charged the people a dollar and a half just to see 'em.
Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone
You pave paradise, and put up a parking lot."

LETTERS & POEMS
*********************************************************************

from Carole Romanowski  (whispjesse@aol.com)

Young…and Green!

Greg Clary, a reporter for Earth Watch, a section published every now and then in the Journal News paper here in NY state, relates in his column the concerns young people today have about the state of the environment in their future. How great they care!

Clary states, “Every time I get a little cynical about our future – environmental or otherwise – I can always get out of my funk by spending time with the folks who will be inheriting that future.” He talked with about 40 SUNY Purchase College students in Purchase, NY recently who are enrolled in an environmental studies program there.

Clary found out there was universal interest in taking care of the planet. Exposure to subjects like air and water pollution, energy consumption and Americans’ seeming lack of action to protect their habitat beyond their own lives opened up the reporter’s eyes! The students were much more tuned into building a sustainable future than any of the college students he knew when he was their age!

When asked what they thought their world will look like in 30 years, one young man answered, “No cars in Manhattan. No one’s going to commute to work for an hour anymore. There’s not going to be so much wasteful traveling, because we’re not going to be able to afford it!”  Everybody seemed to agree with that.

Another young man said he thought people would be growing their own food more, and that food production would be more localized than it is now. One young woman said she had helped her mother grow a vegetable garden from seed to harvest – and that besides compost, you needed patience. That’s not something you think 20-year-olds understand!  For the most part, these future farmers of America understood a little better that we take a lot of things in our daily life for granted.

The other locally produced item in the future, according to the students, will be energy. They saw the value of solar, wind, geothermal and small-scale electricity production.

One student saw a future with big-time vacations to Cancun a thing of the past – jets wouldn’t be able to fly across the world because there wouldn’t be adequate fossil fuel and there would be no green fuel source powerful enough to get them in the air.!

The one concern that almost everyone had was ice caps melting in the Arctic and creating a sea level rise that would make the flooding we’ve seen so far seem like a drop in the bucket. “New York City will be Waterworld” said one quick-thinking young woman!  She also brought up the issue of leadership and how difficult it is to get people moving on important environmental issues. Others said it was up to people to lead themselves, on individual daily decisions like using fewer resources and curbing pollution.

Doing things for the right reasons instead of just to be part of some green trend seemed to resonate with this group! Sounds like a good strategy to me!   How proud John Denver must be of these young people who are not much older than he was when he expressed his concerns for sustaining the environment through limits on consumption and less waste of energy. This proves once again, great ideas withstand the test of time!

I myself have purchased several of the John Denver Books.  The kids just love them and it’s a nice way to keep John’s music playing and passed onto the next generation, while I get to continue to enjoy it. My granddaughter, who just turned five, has been reading and listening to this book for over two years now and says it’s her favorite book every night before bed.

My Dear John Denver Family,

I am asking for your help. I am supporter of The Fellow Earthlings Wildlife Center in Morongo Valley, California which houses Meerkats that are brought to the sanctuary.  If any of you have children that watch Meerkat Manor on Animal Planet, you can see our Meerkats on the opening promos of the show. We cannot let people forget and just let the Meerkat and any other animal interest be a flash in the pan. If Meerkat Manor does not come back on the air, these little guys still so desperately need us. I am appealing to my family at IAT to email the people at Animal Planet asking for a 5th season of Meerkat Manor to be aired so that Meerkats are not forgotten.

You can email the folks at Animal Planet at this link:

John Denver Bench Revisited
by Terri Donahue ItsTerri215@aol.com

On May 17, 2009, my husband, Mark and I decided to take a hike at Connetquot State Park in Oakdale, New York (Long Island).  We both love to hike in the woods and this Sunday morning was a beautiful day for a hike.  I especially didn’t mind going to this park because it would give me another chance to visit the “John Denver Bench.”  Back on June 11, 2000, there was a JD Bench Dedication and Ceremony.  I fondly remember attending this historic event years ago with my other John Denver Family.  As we entered the park, we approached the Main House, which is surrounded by a large porch.  This house is home to the park office, small nature museum, gift shop, and nature classrooms.  The porch area was under major renovations.  It was here, on the covered porch, outside the nature museum door, where the John Denver bench “used” to sit.  I say, “used” to because it was not there!

We ventured on our walk through the many different paths, and along the way were many other benches, each dedicated to a loved one that had passed.  I thought perhaps they just moved John’s bench to another location.  Throughout the park, I read every bench I found, but no JD.  At the end of our walk, we went inside the museum.  We chatted with the curator about the different species of birds that we had seen and then just as we were about to leave…I had to ask.  “A while back there was a bench dedicated to John Denver on the porch.  What happened to it?”  The woman looked at me with a very warm smile and glint in her eye and said, “That bench is safely stored away while we are under renovations.”  As I sighed a sigh of relief, she quickly said, “I know how you feel.  That bench is very special to me also and we are taking good care of it to make sure nothing happens to it.  We will put it back out when the renovations are completed.”

I had found another kindred spirit.  It seems that whenever John is involved, hearts reunite and strangers quickly become friends.  “The man and his music still bring people together.”

The Poetry in Nature

"Two (poets) diverged in a yellow wood"
On like path but at different times.
Both held nature in deep esteem
One through song, the other through rhymes.

John Denver loved the Aspen trees.
Robert Frost the maple, birch, the oak.
He penned poems on their lasting beauty.
Drew mental pictures with his pen's stroke.

But John Denver ventured one step further.
He instructed us in preserving the trees
And all living things in our environment
For none is the least of these.

John and Frost, "Mother Nature's Sons"
And nature lovers remembered since
Both took the road "less traveled by"
"And that has made all the difference."

Howdy,

I found this great website that helps you decide what products to buy based on things like company Labor practices, Human Rights, Community involvement, Not tested on Animals, Ecological impact etc...)

You can type a category at the top ( like "shampoo") and it will give you a list of brands rates best to worst

So you can see if these products stack up on a variety of criteria before you buy - how cool is that?!

World Wildlife Fund (WWF)’s special climate edition newsletter --
http://wwf.worldwildlife.org/site/MessageViewer?em_id=21481.0&dlv_id=22521

Here’s an excerpt –

House Vote on Waxman Markey Climate Legislation

In a bipartisan vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed landmark legislation, June 26, 2009, that would constitute America’s biggest step to date in responding to the energy and climate crises. Through this historic vote, Congress takes the key first step towards a clean energy future.

“This bill is not everything we need, but it is a critical starting point, at a crucial time,” said WWF President and CEO Carter Roberts. “We are seeing the impacts of climate change right in our own backyards. And they are coming faster and hitting harder than anticipated. From heat waves in the South, to flooding rains in the Midwest, to drought in the West, every region of this country is feeling the dangerous and costly consequences of climate change. We have to get started, and this bill would represent an unprecedented leap forward".

World Wildlife Fund officials commended the House of Representatives for taking a first step towards a clean energy economy, creating jobs and exports, and protecting our nation’s quality of life and said the bill is a critical starting point, at a crucial time given the increasing urgency of the climate change problem.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES), would place a national limit on greenhouse gas pollution that declines over time, while setting up a market-based framework to bring down emissions in an economically efficient manner.

It would also launch an effort to begin preparing communities across the U.S. to cope with the impacts that are unavoidable given the changes we are already experiencing. It is critical the U.S. pass a strong climate bill this year in order to demonstrate U.S. leadership on the issue prior to international climate negotiations that will take place this December in Copenhagen. The bill includes particular provisions that are essential to reaching an agreement in Copenhagen.

The bill includes provisions that are essential to reaching an agreement in Copenhagen. It would make critical investments in stopping tropical deforestation, the source of roughly 20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions; would promote technology cooperation between the U.S. and developing countries to help lower emissions world-wide; and would help the world’s most vulnerable people and communities respond to existing and future impacts from climate change.

The passage of the bill comes just days after the release of three major government reports that make clear that there is no time to waste and no reason not to act: a report issued last week by the White House noted that climate change impacts are already being felt in every region of the country and will increase in severity if action is not taken, while analyses released earlier this week by both the Congressional Budget Office and the Environmental Protection Agency concluded that the cost to the average American household of implementing the climate bill would be less than 50 cents day.

Neither the CBO nor EPA studies factored in cost savings that would result from the bill’s mandated improvements in energy efficiency or the additional costs to consumers of unmitigated climate impacts. After adding in those two factors, American households would see significant net savings under the climate bill.
