LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************

Hello all!

Finally finally, all the snow is gone and spring is upon us.  I hope all of you survived the winter without too many hardships.  For our friends Down Under, I know you’ve had a really hot summer, and I hope you’re all doing well too.

In a couple of weeks, I will embark on a trip to West Virginia, a new client/new site to evaluate.  Even after all this time, I can’t help but think of it as “Almost Heaven” – even if JD and Bill and Taffy really meant western Virginia – oh well!

So how did you spend your Earth Day?  Anything interesting and fun to share?  Please pass it on.

And enjoy the beauties of Spring, wherever you are!

My heart to yours,

Ann

PS -- As always, hearty thanks goes out to all those who contributed to this issue of the newsletter.

 From Carole Romanowski  [whispjesse@aol.com]:

Protecting "... That Which is Magic..."

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF - worldwildlife.org) has an excellent commitment to protecting endangered species and their habitats as well as ecosystems worldwide to benefit animals, people and the diversity of life on Earth.

In the past year alone, the WWF has made great strides. In Africa, thanks to a decade of effort from WWF and its partners, there are now approx. 17,480 white rhinos and 4,180 black rhinos, compared to just 8,466 white rhinos and 2,599 black ones in the wild in 1997.

In Eastern Himalayas this past October, through cooperation with WWF, the government of Nepal was able to announce the expansion of the Bardia National Park in the Terai Arc Landscape by over 500,000 acres. The now larger National Park will help stop illegal wildlife trade and poaching of tigers in Nepal.

In the Coral Triangle, WWF helped bring together six  governments in an initiative to address threats such as overfishing, destructive fishing practices, pollution and climate change.

In the Congo Basin, WWF worked to create an expansive protected network to preserve the region's tropical rain forests - home to forest elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees.

In Mozambique, WWF worked with partners to diversify livelihoods in poor fishing communities while reducing pressure on the fragile ecosystem.

The WWF also plans to prevent the demise of wild tigers by providing protection from poachers and safeguarding habitats and wild prey, plus take direct action to fight climate change threatening natural systems on which all life depends.

They are right now protecting the largest remaining forests in Southeast Asia , and are developing new ways of helping wildlife and humans live in harmony, providing alternative livelihoods for local people while protecting nature around them.

The WWF, in conclusion, is joining with local communities and fishing industry leaders to step up efforts to eliminate bycatch, the accidental death of marine life in fishing gear.

How wonderful the WWF is safeguarding the planet's most exceptional places for the benefit of animals and people and the diversity of life on Earth through wildlife conservation - especially those endangered species that depend on us most!

(also from Carole):

The Plastic Ocean

I read recently in my newspaper, The Journal News, that scientists were alarmed by the amount of plastic they found in the ocean on a recent expedition to the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" - soda bottles, cracked patio chairs, Styrofoam chunks, old toys, discarded fishing floats. But most disturbing, they said, was the glut of the confetti-like bits of plastic.

The waste, which is believed to absorb toxic chemicals like DDT and PCBs, is eaten by jellyfish, which are eaten by fish such as salmon or tuna, which people eat!   I guess some people feel the ocean is so vast, their junk in it won't affect it and will virtually "get lost"! Sadly this isn't so. There is no recycling center or garbage pickup system in the ocean. Therefore, over time, one can see how our "disposable society" has had an extremely negative affect on ocean waters and their marine environment. But there's hope in the form of trash cans for waste on good old terra firma!

"Blow Up Your TV..." - A True Story

(by Carole Romanowski - whispjesse@aol.com)

On a tract of land In Upstate New York
Some people decided to go green.
With love and care they grew vegetables.

A more bountiful sight was never seen!

They watered the seeds and nurtured them
On this fertile tract in Upper New York.
And when harvest time came they picked
     the food..
Their mouths watered - but don't grab a
     fork!

For these wonderful "farmers" alerted us
In strict words of clarity
This harvest was done not for us to enjoy
But to feed the poor in charity!

This brings to mind John Denver's song
But the "farmers" didn't build a country
     home
Nor "have a lot of children," nor "(feed) them
     on peaches"
But simply cared about others "on their
     own!"

Interesting paper saving tip:

Given that textbooks are quite expensive, some students are fighting back by buying recently used texts at a fraction of the cost from places like Craigslist. Or perhaps even cheaper and more convenient, you may be able to rent the textbooks you need. Chegg.com, for example, is a mail service not unlike Netflix, in which shipping on return books is free. Chegg plants a tree for every book users rent, sell or buy, and rental costs range from about 10% of list price to about 30%.

From Carole Romanowski:

A unique lady in Bronxville, NY has training in wildlife rehabilitation and nurses and heals - in her own basement! - stunned birds, mostly owls, who get injured flying at full force into windows of high rise dwellings. She then releases them when healed "to rise up on glorious wings!" Good for her and for the owls!
