LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************
Dear Friends,

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I spent mine with my Mom who is currently in a rehabilitation facility. She's recovering from knee replacement surgery and won't be going home until next weekend. Despite how it might sound, it was a lovely day -- as is traditional in our house, we watched the Macy's parade together, and our Thanksgiving feast consisted of submarine (or hero or grinder or etc. -- whatever you happen to call it in your neck of the woods) sandwiches! -- but it brought home to me exactly what Thanksgiving is supposed to be about: being with the ones you love. Not what's on the table.

One of my favorite Thanksgivings was spent at a Salvation Army soup kitchen, serving turkey dinner to the homeless and underprivileged. So much of the holidays these days has to do with commercialization and after a while, we do lose the meaning. We get stuck in that which is really very trivial when you get right down to it. For me, performing this service was a very humbling experience. The people we fed were so thankful to have this meal and to be in a warm, friendly place. Temporarily, their worries of food and shelter were gone and maybe their mood was just a little brighter too. It certainly put into perspective all the things that I was concerned with at the moment, so minor by comparison.

Of course, this year, our thoughts were with those who were absent from their own Thanksgiving tables. Those who are at war...or were lost on September 11th. Even though we may walk through great darkness in our individual lives, this also makes us remember just how very much we have to be thankful for.

My heart to yours,
Ann

Hi everyone!
I've reserved group tickets for the play ALMOST HEAVEN for March 28th. This date is the 'official' grand opening of the play, according to the Denver Center for Performing Arts. Group rate tickets are $22.00, and I only have a limited amount. The folks who expressed an interest several months ago have had first rights to these tickets, and they will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Please let me know right away if you're interested! We'll probably meet somewhere for dinner in advance, to talk and catch up. The play starts at 8:00 pm. General admission tickets won't go on sale until February.

All the best,
Evelyn

Please check out this online article -- I'm grateful for this opportunity to spread the word about the
Blossom Foundation for Children and the Environment.

http://www.nj.com/features/times/index.ssf?/features/times/11-17-FAQD2F0D.html

Here are a couple of excerpts:

Called the Blossom Foundation for Children and the Environment, it takes its name from Asian culture. "In Japanese culture, the blossom is considered the perfection of natural beauty," she said. Sullivan does not accept donations. "Right now, there is no need for me to spend money on it."

The foundation's multifaceted mission is "to better the quality of children's lives throughout the world; and to help prevent violence against children." It also encourages the adoption of hard-to-place children as well as encouraging more parents to become foster families. Additionally, the Web site provides links to other humanitarian sources like the Stuttering Foundation of America, Save the Children, Elie Wiesel, and Boys Town.

ANNAPOLIS, MD SHOW BENEFITTED MARYLAND THERAPEUTIC RIDING

I was fortunate to attend the Hard Travelers benefit for the Maryland Therapeutic Riding (MTR) on 11/9.
Along with the Travelers were John Sommers and Jim Salestrom. It was a fabulous show. They opened with
a video of MTR, with Mack's rendition of "Eagles And Horses" ... it was awesome. They do some great work
with kids and I'm going to plan to go out there to see it.

There was a mix of songs ... the Travelers did some of theirs; Mack did his; John Sommers did some, including "River of Love"; and Jim Salestrom did some. Jim debuted a song entitled "We Live In America", written after the tragic events of 9/11. Some heard this song as a part of a TV commercial while in Aspen. He was selling the CD
single at the show so check his website (www.jimsalestrom.com) for it. Jim also showed us his ability to sing baritone during Buddy Renfro's Native American song entitled "The Fallen Image." This song was co-written by Buddy and Sam Bush. They also did a tribute to John, and John Sommers (of course!) took the lead on "Thank God I'm A Country Boy." "Perhaps Love", "Calypso" and "Rocky Mountain. High" rounded out the set.

After the show, there were three guitars auctioned, which raised an additional $6,000 to the money already
raised from the show.

NOTE FROM CHRIS NOLE - "BACK IN THE USA"

Hey Everybody - I'm back from my first solo tour of Holland and Belgium! I performed nine live shows and
one national radio show (with an estimated one million listeners). All the shows went very well! The live
shows were 'up close & personal' with enthusiastic and supportive crowds. The Dutch know American music
extremely well - most of the pub owners had extensive (American) blues CD collections. Many were hip to the
New Orleans and Boogie/Blues styles I played - a wonderful surprise! My agent(s) were very professional - the venues were well chosen and the crowds were always expecting me when I walked in. I was very fortunate to meet and jam with many local musicians - on a few occasions we had three or four guys on stage playing blues and R&B. There is talk of doing it again next year - we'll see, for now back to the Nashville scene: recording, writing, and
occasional touring. I am happy to be home!

Holland tour photos will be posted (soon hopefully) on: www.roadhouserecords.com

Hope to see you all soon,
Chris

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS
*********************************************************************
DENlines 11/14/01
www.defenders.org

1. MAKING YOUR VOICES HEARD: Redford delivers 'save-the-Arctic' petitions
Actor and conservationist Robert Redford went to Capitol Hill today to deliver more than two million petitions from the Natural Resources Defense Council and Defenders of Wildlife urging President Bush and Congress not to allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge ó America's greatest wildlife sanctuary. Defenders' 1.2 million petitions, generated at the web site http://www.Savearcticrefuge.org, asked Bush and Congress "to save wild places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for future generations." Big Oil and its allies are making a major push now to change the law that protects the refuge. Despite criticism that they are exploiting our national crisis, they are threatening to tack their pro-drilling provision onto important legislation in the Senate to help revive America's economy. The Senate could vote this week, and the outcome is too close to call.

2. THREAT TO ARCTIC REFUGE: BP admits safety problems plague Prudhoe Bay

The British oil giant BP has admitted widespread operational problems at its oil field at Alaska's Prudhoe Bay next to the Arctic refuge. A BP team of employees and consultants "found deficiencies ranging from a lack of maintenance on safety equipment to reports of chronic valve leaks," the Wall Street Journal reported. The team, which conducted its review over the summer after the Journal disclosed safety-valve failures and other problems in a front-page article, interviewed 300 BP workers and contractors. The BP report said workers "consider that certain critical safety systems are in need of urgent maintenance or significant upgrades." The Journal reported, "The findings underscore concerns of critics of President Bush's proposal to drill in the refuge that practices by the oil industry are too slipshod for it to be trusted to go into such a pristine wilderness area." In an editorial, the Anchorage Daily News wrote, "There's a pattern here that looks chillingly close to the inattention and neglect that preceded the Exxon Valdez disaster of 1989."

Take action yourself by going to http://www.savearcticrefuge.org.

3. RECIPE FOR EXTINCTION: Feds may yank protections from Florida manatees

The Fish and Wildlife Service has unveiled a plan that would strip protections from Florida manatees and leave them more vulnerable to reckless pleasure boaters. Officials said they will consider taking manatees off the endangered species list in 2003, even if the species shows zero population growth. That's against the recommendation of the agency's panel of science advisors. They said the reclassification would greatly harm manatees. The Florida Today newspaper called the reclassification plan "a wrong-headed approach that must be prevented. The creatures have been federally protected for three decades under a legal umbrella that has saved them from extinction, and removing that umbrella could result in disaster." So far this year, 276 manatees have died ó 67 of them from being hit by speeding boats.

4. SCIENTIFIC VERDICT: Biologists criticize Canada's species bill

More than 1,300 of the world's top biologists criticized Canada's proposed endangered species legislation in a letter to Prime Minister Jean Chretien. The bill, which is being hotly debated in the Canadian parliament, doesn't mandate protection for the habitats of endangered species, and the list of species would be picked by politicians, not scientists. In addition, citizens couldn't petition the government to protect species. Defenders of Wildlife is working to strengthen the legislation to save Canada's endangered species for future generations. Already, 352 species are at risk of disappearing, and dozens more become endangered every year. "Without effective protection," the scientists wrote in their letter, "many of these species will vanish from the wild or go extinct in our lifetimes, with potentially serious effects on the ecosystems on which human life depends."

5. ALARMING DISCOVERY: Scientists worry over decline of sea otters in Alaska

Federal wildlife officials discovered dramatic declines in the number of sea otters in southwest Alaska. Aerial surveys indicated populations of the gregarious marine mammals are dropping along both the north and south sides of the Alaska Peninsula -- by 40 percent over the past seven years on one archipelago off Alaska's southern coast. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said it's asking for funding to begin protecting sea otters in southwest Alaska as threatened or endangered species. Defenders of Wildlife is working to save sea otters in Alaska and elsewhere. Scientists aren't sure why sea otters are declining. Potential causes are disease, drowning in fishing gear, habitat destruction and lack of food. To learn how you can help, visit http://www.saveseaotters.org. To read the Fish and Wildlife Service's latest report on the decline of sea otters, click here. http://alaska.fws.gov/ea/sotter/declineotter.pdf.

6. RESTORING FERRETS: Defenders commends BLM for releasing rare mammals

After an absence of many decades, 20 highly endangered black-footed ferrets have been returned to public land in central Montana by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It's part of a larger effort to restore a healthy population of these animals throughout the Great Plains. Ferrets once lived all over the Great Plains, wherever prairie dogs occurred, from Saskatchewan to Mexico, from the foothills of the Rockies to the Dakotas, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. But prairie dogs are 90 percent of the ferret's food, and prairie dogs were poisoned systematically beginning in the early 1990s. That decimated ferrets, too. "We are very encouraged that the BLM is taking the initiative and restoring America's most endangered land mammal to the prairies of Montana. This area is our greatest hope for reestablishing black-footed ferrets," said Minette Johnson, Defenders of Wildlife's Northern Rockies field representative. "We have been working long and hard to get ferrets on the ground, and now it's finally happening."
