LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************
Dear Friends,
On the Occasion of 11 September 2002
Such fierce winds today. All around my perch, on the second floor of my house, there
is movement. The shade on the window I'm facing as I type this is continually in
motion -- slapping the screen and then leaving it. The leaves on the trees outside
first whisper, then roar. And then the sounds of a jet plowing through the blue
sky on its way to who knows where. Portents. Remembrances.
A year ago today, there were no winds. The sky was crystalline and cloudless. A
spectacular September morning, the kind of day that brings with it the kiss of autumn,
gives people a "spring in their step", now that the dog days of summer
are gone. For me, September in NYC marked the beginning of something new, the years
in school, all the way through kindergarten to college and then graduate school.
Washington Square Park, where I attended New York University, was the place where
we would sit, under the old elms, and gaze west at the marvel of the Twin Towers.
And so, for six years of my life, I lived in their shadow. Had I been there a year
ago today, I would have turned my gaze west yet again, and watched in utter disbelief
as those towers fell in a smoking heap of rubble and twisted steel. Instead, like
so many others, I was relegated to watch the drama as it unfolded on TV, feeling
helpless and very far from home.
Now September in NYC marks the beginning of something else new, created out of our
shattered collective innocence. A time of healing and rebirth. A celebration of
the resilience of the human spirit as it managed to trump even this unimaginable
horror and leap the void of Ground Zero. Throughout the past year, we've heard stunning
stories of courage and bravery, of those who sacrificed their very lives so that
others might now live. All of them heroes -- not just the firefighters or police,
who tried to climb up into the burning buildings in the hopes of bringing down even
one more soul alive. Not just the passengers of doomed Flight 93, who, in the face
of the ultimate question, were prepared to answer. All. People just like you and
me, who helped their co-workers down the steps, carried the infirm, went back inside
to rescue others after they themselves had escaped. I happened to read "The
Quote of the Day" on abcnews.com today -- "I'm so proud to be an American".
Yes. But even more so -- "I'm so proud to be a human being."
May we learn well from this horrendous calamity. May we cherish our loved ones and
live each and every day as if it is our last. May the fierce winds blow.
My heart to yours,
Ann
PS -- REMINDER: Next month marks the fifth anniversary of the loss of our beloved
John Denver. If you attend a celebration of his life, whether it be in Aspen, Pacific
Grove or anywhere else in the world, please consider sharing your experiences with
your fellow IATers! Contributions for the October newsletter will be accepted until
October 19; any others received after that will appear in our November newsletter.
Thanks! -- AS

There are two quotes that are appropriate this month:
No matter what language we speak, no matter the color we are, no matter the form
of our politics, or the expression of our faith, we all live under the same moon
and the same stars. We are not so very far apart.

From Nancy Holloway:
Over the years the west coast has been a flurry of Windstar activity. Now, however,
it is time to birth some new connections in California, Oregon and Washington. The
past and current leaders of those groups have worked hard
for many years to keep the Windstar vision alive, but other things in their lives
require attention now. We are disbanding the current groups in those three states
and wishing those well who are leaving the leadership positions
and thank them for their dedication. It takes much time, effort and heart to lead
a group, especially for a long time, and we are grateful to all of them. They will
continue their memberships in the foundation and the Windstar-related work they do
every day as a matter of course.
That being said, we would like individuals and friends in those states to consider
applying for Windstar Connection status. The process is relatively painless and starts
with a group of three Windstar members in a particular geographic area. Of course
we are also open to new connections that have a particular interest (e.g. peace cloth).
Please contact me and Penny McDaniel at connections@wstar.org
if you would like more information on establishing a new connection.
Thanks.

From Sherry Cook (backhomagain@yahoo.com)
Just wanted to let the family know that as of August 1st, our group here in sunny
Florida is now official! We are the FLORIDA WINDSTAR CONNECTION!!! I'm soooo excited!!!
We had plans for an up-coming event in October, but they have been put on hold until
Earth Day, which will actually be much better. We will have the opportunity to have
around 1000 people attending instead of who knows how many?! I will keep you up to
date as to what we are doing from time to time, and I hope to put together a newsletter
when we get better organized.
Peace and joy,
Sherry :)

EVENTS REVIEWS

WINDSTAR ONE WORLD, CLEVELAND, OH, 8/16-18/02
From Mev Wilson (macaddict@fuse.net):
WOW! What a great weekend we had in Cleveland at Windstar One World. Due to a lack
of reservations, we moved the event to the home of Jim Toth (Northern Ohio Windstar
Connection), which turned out to be the perfect, intimate setting for exchanging
ideas, learning new information and renewing some old acquaintances. About 30 or
so people attended the Friday evening, all day Saturday symposium. The presenters
participated too, which seemed to broaden the experience for all of us. Here are
some highlights:
Chris Reynold's presentation about healing the inside (individual) before healing
the outside (environment) was deeply inspiring. He had us work with a slab of clay,
putting our deepest pain into it. The results were amazing as people shared their
works. His original music and lyrics added another dimension to the presentation.
Chris also did a wonderful job of setting the intention for the weekend and creating
a sacred space.
Jim helped us understand the need for an ecological identity and led us in an exercise
to find a "nature name." He also did a great job of helping us center and
stay pretty much on time!
Connie Barlow and Michael Dowd gave a high-energy presentation on the cosmic creation
story, looking at the way our universe has evolved and how a shift in our consciousness
is needed for us to become more aligned with nature.
Sister Paula Gonzalez helped us understand the need for renewable energy sources,
focusing on the wind and sun as alternatives. Her ministry in Cincinnati included
building an energy-efficient home for herself and an education center for EarthConnection,
a learning source for renewable energy. At 70, this inspiring woman was an energy
source for us all!
More inspiration came from the video Jim pieced together using segments from Let
This Be A Voice and the 1991 and 1995 Choices Symposia. John Denver's music and words
gave a fitting ending for the weekend. Afterward, many of us adjourned to a local
vegetarian restaurant for more camaraderie. What a great weekend. Proof again that
wherever Windstar family members gather, magic happens.
Thank you, NOWC and Jim and Ana Toth, for hosting a terrific event.

FRIENDS OF JOHN DENVER NEW HAMPSHIRE HIGHWAY CLEANUP AND BBQ, 8/17/02
From: Richard Holmes (gerrich@crosswinds.net):
A note of "thanks" to all those that attended the annual New Hampshire
Friends of John Denver barbecue and highway cleanup. A great day! Great weather!
And great friends! Eight of us joined Diane Nilsson on the highway cleanup. Breaking
up into four groups, we made quick work of our assigned sections. We were delighted
to have a reporter from the New Hampshire Union Leader interview a few of us. You
can see the article on the IAT web page. From here it was on to the barbecue.
About 30 or so folks sang, ate and played in the nearby lake all warmed by the bright,
sun creating a harmonious event of spirit and joy. An event such as this can not
go on with out those that give their time and talent. As always, a big special thanks
to the musicians Paul Swanton, Christine Weaver and Tina Waldron. Whether as a solo
or in a group, these folks do a fine job singing the JD songs we all know and love.
Others were moved by the sprit to try their hand, er... voice at the mike. Denise
Spina and Karen Young joined in on a couple of songs. Rich Ouellette sprinted to
the mike to join Paul on Country Roads and few others. Providing a nice mellow harmonization
to the set. Dan Fyffe, in his slight Irish tenor voice, belted out The Eagle and
The Hawk, among others. It's a delight to see these local folks, charged up to perform
and what it means to them. That's the JD spirit! The evening was capped of with our
rollicking rendition of Calypso.
A special thanks go to a few people. Thanks to Beth Swanton and her "helpers"
for hanging up the Peace Cloth and setting up the information and memorabilia table.
Added a nice touch to the setting. Ginny Turner, for providing the Kool Sweatbands
and donating a portion of the proceeds. Her sweatbands sure cooled this fevered
brow, as I worked the grill. Thanks Ginny! If you'd like to purchase one you can
e-mail her at Gintun@aol.com . And many thanks to Polly Pattison from the Harris Center
for Conservation Education providing information on the work they do locally, with
regard to the environment. The proceeds from the event, $100, will go the Harris
Center building fund, so that they may continue providing education to students and
citizens alike.
Once again thanks to all those that attended. Some new. Some old. And some we haven't
seen in a while. It's always a joy to gather with friends, with a common bond...
John Denver. Till next year....
Peace my friends,
~Richard (aka Willie)

10th ANNUAL PRAYER VIGIL FOR THE EARTH, 9/21-22/02
From Ann Schnitz:
For the second year in a row, the Peace Cloth was invited to participate in the annual
Prayer Vigil for the Earth on the Mall in Washington, DC. Once again, the Peace
Cloth crew pulled off a tough assignment! Luckily, we had some wonderful helpers,
in the form of Lana Zinkon's twin daughters and Eve Kleinfeld's friend, Nelun Jayesinghe,
helping us with putting up and taking down that voluminous mountain of Cloth. And
if you had any doubts, the Cloth is now truly a mountain!
To give you a taste of what this event is about, the Prayer Vigil's vision statement
reads, "The Prayer Vigil for the Earth is a living prayer woven into a seamless
tapestry of many traditions through collective experiences of faith. The Vigil is
a calling to all peoples to gather. Together we pray for harmony with the natural
world, peace among all communities, and the well-being of all Creation." The
participants are Native Americans, Buddhists, Sufi, Muslims, Jews, traditional and
non-traditional Christians, etc., who gather for 36 hours to sing, dance, display
and teach, but mostly to join together to offer prayers for peace (to read more about
this event, go to www.oneprayer.org).
Our Cloth is deployed on stakes around the Prayer Village, and this year, we filled
the entire circle, due in large part to the new September 11 tribute pieces that
are very long and contain all the names of those lost on that terrible day. In fact,
we didn't even put all of the "JD" pieces out -- at least 5 stayed in the
boxes. My guess is that that circle is about 1200 feet around, so that gives you
a sense of how big our cloth is now -- wow!!! By the way -- the new 9/11 pieces are
fabulous -- Deb Chilton, Wendy Nelson, Carol Tomasiewski and Kelly Robison did an
absolutely awesome job -- wait til you see them in Aspen!
Also this year, we were given some time at the main microphone. Lana spoke a little
about the background of the Cloth and its recent travels. Then, we played a recording
of JD reciting "The Peace Poem", and there was dead quiet -- very impressive,
considering there were several hundred people in attendance. After the Peace Poem,
we were allowed to play one of John's songs, and we selected "One World",
for its rhythm and message. That was a huge success -- not only did they play it
once, they played it twice in a row, with everyone dancing or playing drums or shaking
rattles to it. It was truly an awesome sight to see everyone dancing to John's voice
as it boomed out across the National Mall, under the Washington Monument.
So it was a very nice weekend, although hot and humid. I think we surprised the organizing
committee, because they obviously had no idea John had written anything deeper than
"Sunshine On My Shoulders" -- for me, that was a great accomplishment!
Thanks to Eve and Lana (and Amanda, Emily and Nelun) for being a part of it!

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS
*********************************************************************
From DENlines, 9/18/02
1. ANOTHER FOX IN THE HENHOUSE: Official with bizarre views to run forest fire plan
Environmentalists have been saying all along that the Bush administration's so-called
Healthy Forests initiative is a poorly disguised attempt to open more of our few
remaining pristine woodlands to logging. For evidence, just look at who's been appointed
to head the program -- Allan Fitzsimmons, a policy analyst for ultraconservative
"think tanks." Fitzsimmons has criticized religious groups for embracing
the importance of biological diversity. He once wrote that if all 1,200 of the species
listed as endangered or threatened in this country were to go extinct tomorrow, it
"would be a disconcerting loss but would not constitute a crisis."
The Senate could vote this week on the Bush plan to heavily log our national forests
in the name of fire prevention. Environmentalists are for protecting people and property
by clearing small trees and brush near communities, but the administration wants
to chop down large trees deep in our forests to enrich the timber industry. Urge
your senators to oppose the Bush plan. If you haven't already, visit www.denaction.org
and respond to Alert #181.
2. OPEN SEASON ON WOLVES: Wyoming would kill them like jackrabbits or skunks
Wyoming's politicians are making their true feelings known toward endangered gray
wolves. They want to allow the unrestricted killing of these magnificent animals
throughout most of the state. To make hunting legal, the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission
has voted to seek an end to federal protections for wolves. "That means the
wolf could be killed anytime, anywhere, and by any means - the same as a coyote,
jackrabbit or skunk ..." the Associated Press reports. To send a petition to
Interior Secretary Gale Norton urging her not to strip wolves of their federal protections,
go to www.savewolves.org.
3. JENNINGS RESPONDS: Outpouring of protests
prompts reply from ABC News anchor
ABC's one-sided report on wolves in Idaho, giving voice to extremists who want to
kill them, is fueling anti-wolf fanatics like those in Wyoming. The ABC report has
prompted an outpouring of protests from DEN members and other wildlife supporters.
ABC News was hit with so many e-mails that Peter Jennings was forced to respond.
If you were angry when you saw the program, wait until you read Jennings' e-mail
by clicking here http://www.defenders.org/newsroom/jennings.html. Tell ABC and Jennings that you support saving America's
wolves for future generations. To make your voice heard, click here http://abcnews.go.com/sections/wnt/WorldNewsTonight/WNT_newemail_form.html.
4. BEARS NEED YOUR HELP: 'Adopt' a bear to help
save creatures of the forest
"Adopt" a black or brown bear today and help save a life! Bears are threatened
by the Bush administration's attempts to clear-cut our forests. Defenders is leading
efforts to save the creatures of the forest, but we need your help. Your sponsorship
donation will help support our efforts to safeguard bears and the forests they call
home. To "adopt" a bear, visit our Wildlife Adoption Center at http://www.defenders.org/adopt/.
5. SAVE KENAI REFUGE: Big Oil targets pristine
land in Alaska
While the Senate is refusing for now to allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge, Big Oil is targeting a pristine corner of another Alaska wildlife refuge
- Kenai. The Kenai peninsula is known as "little Alaska" because it contains
every geologic feature and wildlife habitat found in the rest of the state - and
most of the species as well. Part of the refuge is already marred by oil and gas
drilling, and that has resulted in hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic spills.
Help save this spectacular land from more for-profit exploitation. Go to www.denaction.org and respond to Alert #185.
6. RESCUING THE SWIFT FOX: 20 more of speedy animals released into wild
Twenty swift foxes were released last week onto the Blackfeet Indian Reservation
on the high plains of northern Montana -- part of Defenders of Wildlife's efforts
to rescue the animal from extinction in that state. Nearly 140 swift foxes have now
been freed into the wild since 1998, and they are well on their way to reclaiming
their niche on more than a million acres of tribal land. "It is very encouraging
to know that these foxes are once again roaming the grasslands where they belong,"
Defenders of Wildlife President Rodger Schlickeisen said. To read our interview with
Defenders of Wildlife's Minette Johnson about this innovative project, click here
http://www.defenders.org/wildlife/new/meso/montana.html
7. CARNIVORES 2002: Scientists to speak at Defenders' conference
Defenders of Wildlife is sponsoring a major three-day conference on marine and terrestrial
carnivores. Called "Carnivores 2002 - From the Mountains to the Sea: A Conference
on Carnivore Biology and Conservation," it will be held Nov. 17-20 in Monterey,
Calif. It will bring together top scientists, natural resource agency personnel,
educators and advocates to discuss carnivore conservation and biology. For more information,
