QUOTE OF THE MONTH
*********************************************************************

The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers and cities; but to know someone here and there who thinks and feels with us, and though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.

--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS

DENlines, 5/28/03

1. IN MEMORY: Family establishes fund for shuttle Columbia astronaut

The family of Columbia astronaut Dr. Laurel Clark has established a memorial fund at Defenders of Wildlife to honor the 41-year-old Navy captain and flight surgeon who died in February's space shuttle disaster. "I want to keep Laurel's memory alive," said her mother, Margory Brown. "I've given a lot of thought to what I could do to fill the hole in my life," said Mrs. Brown. "What could I do to replace Laurel? She told us 'the earth when viewed from space is both beautiful and boundaryless.' Her love of the earth and its wild places kept bringing me back to the environment." Contributions to the fund will benefit Defenders of Wildlife's work, which includes protection for wildlife and endangered species, as well as environmental education.

"We're honored that the family of Dr. Laurel Clark has set up a fund with Defenders to remember this American heroine whose life was cut short as she and the other Columbia astronauts pushed back the unknowns of space. This fund will allow us, in her name, to help save the wildlife and wild lands she loved for future generations," said Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife. 2. URGENT RESEARCH FINDINGS: Commercial fleets killing off giant ocean fish

Only 10 percent of big ocean fish have survived a half-century of industrial fishing, according to a groundbreaking study published in the journal Nature. One of the main villains is longline fishing, where a single boat can trail a line up to 60 miles long that's covered in thousands of hooks. "From giant blue marlin to mighty blue fin tuna, and from tropical groupers to Antarctic cod, industrial fishing has scoured the global ocean," said Ransom Myers, a biologist at Dalhousie University in Canada. "There is no blue frontier left." He estimated the number of fish remaining in the world's oceans as part of a 10-year study of data from fisheries and scientific research institutes. "This calls for a reduction in fishing worldwide so we can allow the natural diversity and fish species to persist in the world's oceans," he said.

3. GUTTING PROTECTIONS: House gives Pentagon blanket exemptions

Under the guise of promoting military readiness, the House last week approved legislation to gut key environmental protections for wildlife and wild lands. But in a show of support for the Endangered Species Act, the Senate voted 51-48 for an amendment by Senators Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, Jim Jeffords of Vermont, and Daniel Akaka of Hawaii requiring that conservation plans meet certain conditions for protecting imperiled wildlife. "The Bush administration and some in Congress are using the real threat of terrorism and the war in Iraq to lay down a bogus smokescreen in an ideological attack against our nation's most fundamental environmental protections," Defenders President Schlickeisen said. "But the Senate vote shows that the majority in the Senate realize that the American public supports protection of endangered wildlife and opposes these unnecessary exemptions sought by the Bush administration's Defense Department."

4. WHITMAN RESIGNS: EPA chief's departure swings gates wide open to polluters

The resignation of Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christine Whitman "could drop the White House's environmental batting average from merely horrible to off-the-charts abysmal," Defenders President Schlickeisen warned. Whitman resigned last week after two years during which the EPA served the interests of industry more often than the public. "This administration has compiled a horrifying track record, not just ignoring the environment, but aggressively working to undermine decades of laws that protect our air, water, wildlife and land," Schlickeisen said in a statement to the news media. "Governor Whitman appears to have occasionally bucked the anti- environmental tide all around her, but she was never able to blunt the visceral tilt in this White House toward corporate interests above all others."

Interior Secretary Gale Norton is the Cabinet member who should resign. She has filled her department's most senior positions with industry insiders and lobbyists, allowing big corporations to seriously weaken our nation's environmental protections. In fact, watch for a "Now With Bill Moyers" report investigating Interior Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles' ethical problems and conflicts of interest. The program airs this Friday evening on PBS stations. To urge President Bush to remove Norton from office, go to www.StopNorton.org.

5. BEING CARIBOU: Trying to understand one of our last great mammal migrations

The fate of the 123,000-member Porcupine Caribou Herd is at the center of the decades-long debate over whether to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But what do we really know about these magnificent animals and their annual migration to their endangered calving grounds? On April 8, two Canadians left the community of Old Crow in the Yukon Territory to join the caribou on their epic life journey. Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison hope to travel 2,700 miles across snow and tundra by ski and foot to understand one of North America's last great mammal migrations before it's too late. 6. WOLF GUARDIANS: Volunteers coming to the rescue again in Idaho

Volunteers from across the United States are about to begin their third summer fighting to protect endangered gray wolves in Idaho's rugged Sawtooth Mountains. They are the Wolf Guardians, organized and equipped by Defenders of Wildlife. Operating from encampments deep in the backcountry, they employ a variety of methods to keep wolves away from sheep and cattle. They chase wolves away in the night by shouting, singing and banging pots and pans. They've also installed electric fences around livestock or strung up red flags in the forest -- something known as fladry that wolves have been shown to avoid. "Our team came from all walks of life, ages and experience levels. You just need to care about wolves," says Susan Kline, a volunteer from Simi Valley, Calif.

Wolves need good-will ambassadors. Secretary Norton is trying to strip federal protections from these magnificent animals. That would make it easier to kill wolves in the Lower 48 states. To urge Norton to protect America's wolves, go to www.savewolves.org.
