LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************

Dear Friends,

Ann and I apologize for the lateness of this newsletter. Ann was away on a business trip to New Orleans and between the power outages and my working, I'm just getting this out. We should be on schedule for the next issue!

I would like to thank all of you for your contributions to the Sund/Carrington Foundation. I still have plenty of Frank's beautiful CD "Take Them Home" so this fundraiser will continue until all are sold. I sent checks totalling $90 so keep them coming! Please e-mail me if you are interested or need details.

Yesterday was the 4th annual Country Roads Folk Festival at the Almost Heaven Ranch in Kearneysville, WVA. It was wonderful as ususal and the tribute to John was terrific. It was done this year by the Hard Travelers with special guest John Sommers who was in town for the annual Cystic Fibrosis concert the previous evening with Martina McBride. I spoke with Kenn Roberts at the festival and they raised 1 million dollars Friday night! Congratulations Kenn!!!!!

One surprise entertainer at the festival was the writer of Martina's "Happy Girl" and "This Kiss" ... Beth Nielsen Chapman. If she ever appears anywhere in your areas, she's a must see. They also had folk legend Richie Havens doing shades of Woodstock ... it was great!!!

Please note the event in Ohio that Christopher Canyon, Illustrator of "Sunshine", is doing ... for those of you who will not make it to Aspen, it will be the same show he'll do on October 11. If you haven't gotten your copy of the book ... do it now!! It's beautiful. I apologize for the short notice but he just sent me this! Let me know if you have any problem registering.

Thanks everybody for your patience and support of IAT and we'll talk to you again next month! Everyone have a safe trip to Aspen! See you there!!!!

Peace- Mary

THE LOSS OF A GREAT ENTERTAINER

We lost another legion in the field of comedy - Bob Hope. I always remember his special filmed in Tahiti on which John was a guest. I watched it in my hotel room in Reno, NV after having attended John's celebrity ski in Lake Tahoe.

Here is a letter from Bob Radock of Disney:

Speaking of Bob Hope.

I recall when we had John and Bob Hope together at the Walt Disney World 25th Anniversary celebration in 1996. John made conversation with Bob and Delores throughout the three day event, and especially prior to the parade of the stars at the Disney-MGM Studios. I recall John kidding with Bob about his golf game, and how he was looking forward to playing in Bob's tournament. They both drew huge crowds! We miss them both tonight.

Bob Radock

PS -- thanks to all who contributed to this month's IAT newsletter -- AS & ML

TRIBUTE TO JOHN DENVER

Some of you might already know about this, but please publish it for those who don't:

"I wrote 'Colorado' as a tribute to John Denver. I was fortunate enough to have spent time and performed with John many times over the last 10 years in many settings such as the 'Choices for the Future' symposium in Aspen; the World Forum Conference in San Francisco and a United Nations Environment Programme event in Shimukappu, Japan. But more importantly, long before then when I was just a teenager growing up in suburban New Jersey, songs like 'Rocky Mountain High,' 'Sunshine' and 'Country Roads' (to name a few) helped awaken in me the wonder of our beautiful land, the lust for travel and the thirst for knowledge gained by the experience and teachings of the natural world. His songs became part of the foundation of my soul and his passion for life and concern for the well-being of this planet and all its inhabitants will always be a great inspiration to me. From my heat, John, I send you love and thanks for all that you've given so many of us in this life. Peace."

Amen. Thank you, Peter.

From:  Judith Gabriel (judithgabriel@comcast.net)

Hi Everyone,

Just trying to keep everyone up-to-date on what's going on in PA. I know that many of you are out of state folks, but as I said, just keeping you informed. See below for info about this year's event.  Even better, go to the website and if you are able to come, copy the form, fill it out, and send in your check
www.judithgabriel.com/foundation.htm

Last year we actually only made a little money after costs--enough to pay legal and government fees to start the foundation. The only little donation, $50, went to The Reading/Berks Human Relations Council, trying to keep them going. They gave really nice programs to schools and law enforcement professionals on how to accept and interact with different racial, ethnic, and religious. I wanted to make this gesture, knowing John's believe in the oneness of all humanity.

The dinner/dance we are giving is to help raise money for an even bigger event that will generate more income to give back to environmental projects in Berks and PA. If anyone asks why those two areas, just tell them that my corporate sponsorship will probably be coming from those quarters, so that until we grow a lot, the money will have to stay here. John was a global citizen and I'm sure he would be glad to help any part of Mother Earth.

I'm meeting, this Friday with the Head of Agriculture from Penn State and the PA Land Preservation people to see how they can help me. After all if they and you help the foundation, it will be able to give back substantially, maybe not right away, but in the not so distant future. The Land Preservation people, in talking on the phone, indicated exactly what John said--she said there are so many wilderness places in PA that they want to buy because when they are gone, they are gone.

1. President Bush Puffs Up Environmental Image on Multi-State Tour

Amid criticism that he is too closely allied with the oil and timber industries President Bush has begun a three-week tour of western states designed to promote his environmental policies.

"This is an administration that apparently will stop at nothing to weaken environmental protection to benefit their supporters in industry, and no public relations show is going to change that," said Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife.

Environmental groups were quick to condemn the President's environmental tour, contrasting it with his policies which have been devastating for the environment. Media coverage of the tour also pointed out that Bush's was journeying to states that he lost by small margins in the 2000 elections and quoted an anonymous Republican strategist as saying that Bush's team "wants to reassure voters in rural areas who are concerned about the environment." (Washington Post, by Mike Allen, 8/11/03)

For more information on forest policies, go to

2. President Nominates Utah Governor Leavitt to Head EPA

President Bush has tapped Utah Governor Mike Leavitt (R) to replace outgoing Environmental Protection Agency head Christine Todd Whitman.

Defenders of Wildlife and other environmental groups expressed grave concerns about Leavitt's commitment to protecting the our land, air, and water. Leavitt is an outspoken advocate of shifting environmental regulatory responsibility to the states and recently negotiated with Interior Secretary to strip wilderness protection from more than six million acres of Utah land.

To view Rodger Schlickeisen's full statement on the Leavitt nomination, visit:

3. Northeast Blackout Pushes Energy Bill Back to Center Stage

Last week's blackout in the Northeast has given new life to a badly-flawed energy bill, which had lost momentum on Capitol Hill. The House included language in their bill that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling -- the Senate did not.

The blackout prompted renewed calls for Congress to complete work on the legislation, with an eye toward upgrading the nation's power grid. Now Arctic Refuge drilling is back on the table, meaning that once again we need to let lawmakers know that we do not support any energy bill that permits drilling in the Refuge.

For more information on this issue, and to sign a petition opposing drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, go to

4. Help Save the Whales

Please Help Save the Whales!

Whales like the endangered North Atlantic Humpback once numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Today, there are approximately 5,000 to 7,000 left. Illegal killings, a depletion of their food source, deadly underwater sonar testing and heavily polluted oceans continue to threaten all species of whales. More than ten thousand whales have died since the international whaling ban in 1986.

Help Defenders of Wildlife protect these magnificent creatures, by "adopting" a whale today. Go to
http://www.defenders.org/adopt/whale/

5. Northwest Salmon on the Rebound--President and Scientists Differ on Who Should Get Credit

In Washington State, the number of salmon returning from the Pacific Ocean is well above last year's level. Bush Administration officials and environmentalists have both hailed the return of healthy salmon populations to the Northwest. But that's where the agreement ends.

President Bush will travel to Washington on Friday, August 22, to talk about what he calls his administration's successful attempts to protect salmon runs. But scientists believe that the surge in the salmon population is due to favorable ocean conditions and have objected to the notion that the President's efforts are somehow responsible.

The President's political advisor, Karl Rove, met with irrigation farmers and helped them reverse a ruling preventing the diversion of water from the Klamath River -- which led to last fall's Klamath River salmon kill -- more than 30,000 fish died in the river after water was diverted to irrigate farms.

6. California Congressmen Hold "Hearings" Desert Conservation, Exclude Environmentalists From Testifying

Defenders of Wildlife and other environmental groups expressed their outrage late last week as California Reps. Pombo and Radanovich held one-sided hearings on the future of the Algodones Dunes Area and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. At each hearing, witness lists were stacked with off-roading and commercial sport fishing special interest groups, while environmental advocates werecompletely excluded.

"It is unconscionable that two members of Congress would hold such one-sided hearings on issues that affect so many of their constituents," said Defenders associate Cynthia Wilkerson. "Hearings in which all sides are represented are not too much to ask of our
leaders."
