LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************
Dear Friends,
Hey guys! You know that the lyrics of our theme song say, "It's about
you
and me together...?" Well, I need you -- all of you -- to help me out
a
little in sending in letters and contributions for this newsletter. If
you've been to a great concert, we want to hear about it. Pick up any good
trash lately? Tell us. And if there's something bugging you, we want
to
know that too. This is YOUR newsletter, and I want to be able to continue
sending it to you each and every month. So please...consider writing
something to share with your fellow IATers. Thanks!
My heart to yours,
Ann

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
*********************************************************************
"Those who contemplate the beauty of
the earth find reserves of strength
that will endure as long as life lasts. There is symbolic as well as actual
beauty in the migration of the birds, the ebb and flow of the tides, the
folded bud ready for the spring. There is something infinitely healing in
the repeated refrains of nature - the assurance that dawn comes after night,
and spring after the winter. The lasting pleasures of contact with the
natural world are not reserved for scientist but are available to anyone who
will place himself under the influence of earth, sea, and sky, and their
amazing life."

From Mary Ledford (eagleshorses@yahoo.com)
Hi Guys!
I'm sorry to take so long getting this to you ...things have been a little
crazy since I got home. We had a great time -- photos from the rehearsal
and show can be found on: www.thecasa.org website
John Denver's 60th Birthday New Year's Celebration
Scottsdale, AZ - 12/31/03
This concert was a benefit for the Andre House of Arizona which is a
ministry to the homeless and poor population of the Phoenix area
(www.andrehouseaz.org) and The Hunger Project (www.thp.org). The concert
was co-sponsored by Expect A Miracle Foundation and the Franciscan Renewal
Center (www.thecasa.org).
The concert took place in the main chapel of the Renewal Center and as you
will see in the photos, it was beautifully decorated for the holidays. It
was a phenomenal show ... of course, when you have this calibre of
musicians, what else could it be?
The opening song was a musical intro (Fly Away) superbly performed by Pete
Huttlinger, Jim Horn and Chris Nole. Then followed Rocky Mountain High,
Spirit, Boy From The Country, Mother Nature's Son, Sunshine, Wild Montana
Skies, Sweet Surrender, McGuire's Landing (this beautiful melody was written
by Pete. John heard this song and asked Pete if he could write lyrics to it
... unfortunately, we'll never get to hear what lyrics John would have
written), Baby You Look Good To Me Tonight, It's About
Time, Matthew, Thank God I'm A Country Boy.
After a brief intermission, Chris (on guitar!) and Mollie Weaver did a
wonderful rendition of Chris' "Down Home Time" after which Mollie offered
an
incredible version of Sara Brightman & Andrea Bocelli's "Time To Say
Goodbye" in Italian. You can read about this song at the following website:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~josvg/cits/sb/sb412.html
Mollie's uncle was in the audience and it was the first time he'd seen her
sing live and it's also his favorite song. After she finished, there were a
few tears in her eyes after which she did Annie's Song wondering how she was
going to get through it after that! Then followed Poems, Prayers and
Promises, Grandma's Feather Bed, Back Home Again, Postcards From Paris, On
The Wings of a Dream, Sweet Misery, For You (Chris performed this as he's
done the past couple of years in Aspen!), Wings That Fly Us Home, Eagles and
Horses and the entire cast came together and did Calypso.
At the end, we all sang Happy Birthday to John. There is talk of this
becoming a yearly event ... I sure hope so!

From Jennifer Moore (mtnjenny@sopris.net)
Hi everyone!
Tonight (Friday, 3/5/04), the ABC affiliate TV station in Denver showed a
great website for everyone to check out. Xcel Energy has set up some very
special "birdcam" sites.
There is a major power plant northeast of the Denver Metro area that has
large acreage and has become home to a variety of wildlife. They have
recently installed silent, digital, solar-powered cameras to take photos of
several bald eagle nests on their property. These cameras are poised
overhead, high above the nests, and supposedly are completely unobtrusive.
From viewing several days of photos with the parents-to-be sitting on the
nest and moving in and out without concern, I would like to believe that the
cameras are, in fact, not disturbing them.
The Xcel Energy's site is: www.xcelenergy.com
Go to the website. Along the left side near the bottom of the "choices"
is
a box that says "Tools". At the bottom of that box it says "birdcam".
From that link, you can choose photos or info on their cameras on a nest of
owls, a nest of falcons, or the bald eagles. New photos are taken every
5-10 minutes and it is constantly updated. You click on an hour of a day
and it brings up the series of photos for that hour! Right now the eagles
are busy egg-sitting and aren't moving around much, but whenever they hatch,
it should get really interesting!
Pretty cool!
The ABC Evening News (also tonight) had a fantastic short piece about the
wolves in Yellowstone. It went by so fast I couldn't get a tape in to catch
any of it, and the abcnews.com website didn't seem to offer any help, but
maybe I just didn't look hard enough or know where to click.
Also, I got a new booklet from Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado with their
2004 projects listed. Everything from trail maintenance to building and
restorations projects.
Go to www.voc.org to check out these opportunities. Last April, I
participated with over 400 other volunteers to help restore areas affected
by the Coal Seam forest fire in Glenwood Springs (it burned to within a
block of my apartment!). The teams planted trees and other vegetation to
control erosion, and worked with potential drainage problem areas before the
snow melt and late spring rainy season got underway. Other teams also
worked on the Heyman Fire burn areas outside of Denver at the same time.
VOC does a lot of great projects, and even worked at Windstar on a wetlands
project in 2002.
As I drove upvalley (towards Aspen) for an appointment yesterday afternoon,
there is one spot (before you get to Carbondale) where a large heard of elk
"hang out" a little ways away from Hwy 82, with Mt. Sopris looming overhead
in the distance. Usually there are about 20-35 of these magnificent
animals, just "waiving" at the passing cars. This time they must
have
brought their friends as there was at least of 100 elk scattered over a
wider area than usual, and closer to the road than usual. How gorgeous!
Naturally I didn't have the camera along. And I saw the bald eagles "fly
fishing" on the Crystal River south of Carbondale last weekend -- Hwy 133 --
one of my favorite drives.
Oh my! The full moon just rose above the ridge overlooking Glenwood
Springs -- it's shimmering across the Roaring Fork River just outside my
door. Happy evening, everyone!

From the PA Friends of John Denver Newsletter (tigersnwolves@comcast.net)
I'm happy to say that the spring retreat to The Bitter Goose Lodge is
filled! This is a first. The response to this retreat has been quick and we
all look forward to spending a great weekend together in April. We have some
wonderful things planned for this year, including the planting of a tree in
memory of John near Raystown Lake. A big thank you to Nancy Huffman who
initiated the letter to the Bitter Goose inquiring if it would be possible
to plant a tree for John either on their property or nearby. That note, in
turn, was passed along to a Park Ranger for the Raystown Lake area and that
person turned out to be a long time John Denver fan! And it so happens that
they have recently built a new amphitheater, near the lake and they would be
happy to have a tree in memory of John planted there. Wow! Could we ask for
a better spot? So, as I write this, Nancy Huffman, Patty Speicher and Eileen
Stein are busy arranging for the tree, a plaque and putting together a
dedication ceremony for everyone to enjoy. Thank you!
Our faithful friend, Ed Stowers will be busy gathering all the musicians
together and organizing our sing-a-long for Saturday night. He's got a large
task ahead of him, I'm afraid, as when he took on this "job" he was thinking
maybe three guitarists would be there, based on our past history. This year
we have a whopping EIGHT guitarists joining us!!! If you play the guitar and
he hasn't been in touch with you yet, he will be. So another big thank you
goes out to Ed!
I will be working on putting together information packets for all involved;
with maps, directions, list of what to bring, etc. I will be mailing these
out at the end of March. If someone does not receive one by April 5th,
please let me know.
Oh, here's an interesting fact...this year we will set a new record with
people joining us from SIX states! (PA, VA, NY, MD, NJ and MA)
It amazes me....
I look forward to seeing everyone there.

A Biweekly Update from Defenders of Wildlife: Working to Save Wildlife and Wild Lands
Bears May Be Next Victims of Aerial Killing in Alaska
White House Still Calling for Trade in Endangered Species
Scientists Claim Bush Administration Misusing Science
Interior Department Changes Tune on Navy Landing Field
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Bears May Be Next Victims of Aerial Killing in Alaska
Apparently, the current aerial gunning of wolves in Alaska is not enough for some
trophy hunters and their supporters in the state government. The Alaska Board of
Game, which previously approved the aerial killing of wolves, leading to at least
91 wolf deaths already, is meeting to hear a number of proposals, including some
that call for aerial gunning and bait-and-shooting of grizzly and black bears, as
well as the selling of bear parts and the killing of bear cubs that are still with
their mothers. The board may also extend aerial gunning of wolves to other areas.
Sign a petition to oppose aerial gunning.
2. White House Still Calling for Trade in Endangered Species
Last fall, thousands of our readers urged the Bush administration to withdraw two
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposals that would allow commercial international
trade in endangered species for the first time in thirty years. Months after it first
promised to do so, the service has finally reopened the public comment period on
one of these controversial proposals. Although the Bush administration claims it
will consider public comments already received, it also says that the public was
"confused" about the impact of the proposed rule - a cynical argument that
will allow the service to easily dismiss thousands of comments on this important
issue. Visit our action center and click on alert #282 to send a letter to the Bush
administration letting them know that you're not "confused," and you still
oppose international trade in endangered species. The deadline for comments is March
9.
3. Scientists Claim Bush Administration Misusing Science
Sixty renowned scientists, including 20 Nobel laureates, recently denounced the Bush
administration for misusing science. According to the scientists, the administration
has, among other abuses, suppressed and distorted scientific analysis from federal
agencies, and taken actions that have undermined the quality of scientific panels.
The statement and a report released detail multiple areas in which the White House
is either ignoring, suppressing or distorting science. One example cited involves
the suppression of an Environmental Protection Agency study that found that the bipartisan
Senate clean air legislation would reduce mercury contamination and prevent human
illness more than the administration's misnamed "Clear Skies Act."
4. Interior Department Changes Tune on Navy Landing Field
In a move that some critics called a "political fix," the Department of
the Interior has changed its mind about the negative effects that a military jet
landing field will have on endangered red wolves and a slew of migratory birds in
North Carolina. A letter drafted by the Interior Department in November expressed
concerns with the landing field site - located near Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife
Refuge - stating that it could have negative effects on birds and other species.
Craig Manson, assistant secretary for fish, wildlife and parks, now states that the
department "can accept the Navy's decision." Local communities and a group
of conservation organizations, including Defenders, are suing to halt the construction
of the field. Learn more.
