President Lyndon B. Johnson, upon signing of the Wilderness Act, 1964:

"If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it."

From Debra Chilton (wilco@paclink.com):

Kyle Vincent House Concert

On a cloudy and gray day in Portland, Oregon, the sun broke through for a
group of people gathered in the livingroom of Aurelia Wight as Kyle Vincent
began what was to be an amazing two-hour concert.  Laughter and tears were
shared as Kyle's songs painted visions of a world that can be, a place of
peace, of green trees and babbling brooks, of swimming in the ponds and
being part of the natural world.  Many of the songs Kyle sang are soon to be
released on a new CD.

All of Kyle's songs were amazing, but I want to share with you a few that
really touched my heart.  "The Last Hawk" spoke of a Hawk looking down upon
the world now and speaking with God about what she saw, and would it be with
a tear or a smile.  Another was of Alice Brook....of  the beauty and joy
that she gave to all, the strength with which she fought while slowly being
destroyed by the pollution and poisons that were being emptied into her, and
as she finally gave in, the loss to all.  So many amazing and beautiful
songs that were all written and performed by an extremely talented, charming
man who has personality plus and "walks his talk."

Kyle closed his performance by speaking of John Denver and the influence
that John had on his music, along with Barry Manilow and Karen Carpenter.
He spoke of the Peace Cloth and Windstar and he performed John Denver's
"Looking For Space," with as much passion and bravado as I have ever heard.
The last song was Sierra, the beautiful song Kyle has written for John Muir
and John Denver.   If Kyle is anywhere near your area performing, I cannot
encourage you enough to go and hear him.  He has stated with all sincerity
that his goal is not about getting into the top 100 music list, but only to
reach more people with his music by speaking of hope and peace.

Check out his website at www.kylevincent.com.  Let us support those who
carry forth the message of hope and love for our planet, our children and
for peace.

Hello my fellow JD friends! Spring is upon us and time for our sixth year of
cleaning our adopted highway. On a recent Sunday we held our first cleanup
of the new year. Always an extensive cleanup, as the accumulated trash has
been collecting for some six months now. Couple that with little or no
vegetation and we can "see" further into the woods. So it's a daunting task
for six pickers. At the completion of our appointed rounds we collected 20
bags of assorted trash, and other "finds". Always interesting how stuff gets
here and why.  In the past we have found all kinds of interesting junk. And
sometimes a real find. Like a "good" payroll check. In which we were able to
track down the business owner and return the check to them. He was looking
for his check register too, but we did not find that. A golf ball, far from
any golf course, though not a Titlist. A dead body.... eeew! On this trip I
picked up a 3/8 combination wrench along with a folding pair of pliers. The
multi-function type. I can always use more tools!! Glenn on the other hand
found some "real" coin. Some old coins totaling something like a $1.65. And
then there's the horn tooting and thumbs up from passersby. A "profitable"
and rewarding day in all! Many thanks to Gerrie, Diane, Glenn and Kathy &
Bill Engle, who in their seventies, can out pick us all!!

Our next cleanup is Sunday June 13th. And don't miss out on our annual BBQ
and highway cleanup on Aug. 15th! Paul Swanton will be providing the
"picking" of another kind!!!

Cheers!
~Richard

((Besides trash, be on the lookout for ticks you might pick up during your
highway cleanups, gang! Try to wear light clothing and inspect each other
thoroughly afterwards -- tick-borne diseases can be nasty business -- AS))
*****
Further thoughts from Richard on Highway Cleanups:

Long-EZ and lessons learned

In our recent highway cleanup there was another interesting "find". The rare
sighting of a Long-EZ flying over head. While there are many small plans
from the local airports circling the skies, it's not often you see a
Long-EZ. Less so on the day you're cleaning the John Denver adopted highway.
As if to solidify this sign, it was also flying in a westerly direction.
This again to me is of significance, as I regard John as embodying the whole
western spirit. Both in song and lifestyle. He even has said that if he were
labeled anything it would be that of a western artist. So being one of a
spiritual mind, I regard this "sighting" as a sign from John. As if to say,
"thanks for doing your part". And to others, that's all it may be. But for
me the meaning went deeper.

While cleaning our adopted highway, my wife and I got into a bit of a tiff,
over the extent of our cleaning area. I, being in the service sector
(flooring), pride myself on doing a job well. Going the extra 110% of
customer satisfaction. And I guess this carries over to things like the
highway cleanup. If I see a piece of paper off in the woods, I'll fight the
underbrush to go after it. Of course this will take more time and we already
go the "extra mile" by cleaning the entire length of the lakeshore.  By
going deeper into the woods, it is perhaps not necessary, as the woods are
not necessarily a part of the highway. But I tend to believe that doing a
job right is doing it well. In a sense I guess, I was trying to do it all.
When it really isn't necessary, particularly if it causes a rift in my
relationship with my wife.

As if to reaffirm this notion of mine, another "sign" occurred the following
day. Here in our home office, we have two computers networked. So from time
to time, I'll come across something I think might be of interest to my wife
and send her a link via e-mail. Particularly if she has gone to bed or
something, lest I forget. And she, vice-versa. Several weeks back I came
across an article written by a woman who had attended the John Denver play
"Almost Heaven". In it, she described how John and his music affected her
life. About being all you can be and a reawakening of the human spirit. I
sent my wife the link at that time. Now, the next day after the cleanup, a
reply comes back to me from her.  Nothing in the e-mail. Nothing to read.
Just the subject line. "Almost Heaven: For John Denver" which is what I sent
her. The uncanny thing is... she didn't send the reply. Nor did anyone else.
And I have no reason to suspect otherwise.

While many folks will see these "signs" as ordinary things, others, like
myself can "read" the hidden message. The interpretation depends upon what
is occurring around you at the time and what is dwelling on your mind. For
me, the lesson learned here is that my zeal for cleaning the highway should
not obscure my loving relationship with my wife, or that of my friends. And
that while we all embrace John's ideology of "what one man can do", we don't
need to do it all and become obsessed with this notion. After all if we each
do our own part, however little or not that maybe, together we can get it
done. We, "I" don't have to do it all, just that we do it.

Peace to all,
~Richard

Dear Friends:

I had an absolutely wonderful time at the Spirit Windstar Connection Retreat at the Bitter Goose Lodge "somewhere in the mountains" between Harrisburg and Pittsburg, PA. Long drive but well worth it.

The ranger at the recreational center is really "one of us" and is cooperating for both the tree and a dedication
ceremony / concert using the new ampitheatre at the center.  She send the Spirit folks pics already and talk about a fast post!!!  Check out this page:
http://www.geocities.com/spiritwsconnections/TreesforJohn_OurWorld.html

There are VERY VERY VERY VERY tentative plans to hold the tree dedication possibly during the Perseid Meteor Show combined with a Tim & Amy Dabbs / Chris Westfall / Frank DeLaMarre / Ray (Roy) Erhart free outdoor concert at 7 Points Rec Center on either Friday August 13 or Saturday August 14...

If it happens, the spots for performers are filled (before you ask, Mack Bailey and Paul Swanton are already booked for other events), now all we need are sponsors...

Hope to see you there!!!

Dear IAT:

I was at a Church dinner the other day when one of the other diners asked me
what I do.  I started talking about Rocky Mtn High and then they told me
that a JD Musical was playing in Arrow Rock, MO.  I figured it might be
"Almost Heaven" and sure enough it is! I did a search and can't find it
playing anywhere else in the U.S.  I wonder why a little town in Missouri is
the only place it would play?  But still it is a good sign.  Maybe other
theatre companies will produce it as well.

Apparantly the town of Arrow Rock is about 90 miles from Kansas City -- hope
to see you there!

A Great Gift Idea!

I celebrated my birthday this past April 25th and received a beautiful and
touching present from my daughter, Jennifer, who is a gift in herself, as
you will see. She knows I have a passion for browsing through antique stores
abundantly available to me here in the Hudson Highlands of N. Y. State. They
are veritable treasure troves rich in history and art. I have purchased
period furniture such as rocking chairs, tables and side chairs from the
Elizabethan and Victorian eras (circa 1850 - 1890) to grace my home, and I
recently bought a large milk can from the 1930's, to name a few of my
"finds."

I heard John Denver singing the song "Wild Flowers in a Mason Jar" which
inspired me to own a mason jar from years ago because I can identify with
the song's lyrics.  You see, as I was growing up, my mother, "with the
memory still warm", would often tell me about her childhood days spent on my
grandfather's farm upstate in Kingston, N.Y. She had very precious memories,
of which one was helping  my grandmother preserve jams and jellies in mason
jars. And  as the contents of the jars were consumed, my mother would fill
the jars with wild flowers growing in fields near the farm.

So my daughter, having heard the farm stories I passed down to her, searched
many antique stores on her own until she finally located a mason jar from
the early 1900's. She filled it with dried wild flowers and wheat, and since
Jennifer is into crafts as a hobby, she copied the song John sang and framed
it in a green country plaid fabric over a cardboard frame she made herself
and presented all to me on my birthdayj!  What a welcome surprise!  The jar
and framed song are now sitting on my fireplace mantle to enjoy.....and to
remember.

I wanted to pass on Jennifer's "crafty" gift idea to you should you have
occasion to give a present to a loved one or to a friend. Since my dear
mother passed away last August, I want to thank my beautiful daughter
Jennifer for preserving some of my mother's history for me - it's such a
comfort at this time - as well as thank my mother for so many things, some
of which are "those old stories" of the farm.  And I want to thank JD for
having such a positive influence on my life and for being the inspiration
behind this special birthday present through his gift of song.

A Biweekly Update from Defenders of Wildlife:
Working to Save Wildlife and Wild Lands

President Bush Petitioned to Stop Aerial Gunning of Wolves in Alaska
Drilling Proposal Endangers Montana's Rocky Mountain Front
Whistleblower Leaves Agency, Cites Misuse of Science by White House
Former Timber Lobbyist Originally Hatched Hatchery Fish Plans

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. President Bush Petitioned to Stop Aerial Gunning of Wolves in Alaska

The aerial gunning program in Alaska , which ended for the season on April
30, left 147 wolves dead. Up to 500 wolves are slated to be killed next
season (beginning in late fall), and hundreds more could be killed annually
for the next four to five years. The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund has
drafted a petition, asking President Bush to use the Federal Airborne
Hunting Act - legislation originally enacted to bar the use of airplanes for
such hunting - to stop the killing. Please sign the petition today.

2. Drilling Proposal Endangers Montana's Rocky Mountain Front

The federal Bureau of Land Management is working on plans that could allow
road building, drilling, pipelines and more to invade Montana's Rocky
Mountain Front. The bureau is moving forward despite the fact that the front
is in the top 1 percent of wildlife habitat in the country, including land
for grizzly bears, wolves and lynx. Sen. Max Baucus (D-Montana) has asked
the bureau to consider swapping or buying the leases from StarTech Energy
Corp., a Canadian company that holds rights to drilling in the area. Learn
more, and visit our action center  (go to alert #310) to stop this
disastrous plan.

3. Whistleblower Leaves Agency, Cites Misuse of Science by White House

A federal biologist resigned from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric
Administration - the agency that oversees oceans and fisheries - citing a
misuse of science by the Bush administration. The biologist, Michael Kelly,
cited the federal decision to withhold water from the Klamath River in 2002,
which killed approximately 33,000 salmon, as a reason for his resignation.
Kelly also mentioned the 2002 decision by the White House to relax
protections for dolphins from tuna fishing as a misuse of science. Recent
news (see DENlines, May 11, 2004) suggest that the federal government
ignored information that government observers in Mexico are taking bribes to
create false reports that tuna fishing boats in that country are not harming
dolphins.

4. Former Timber Lobbyist Originally Hatched Hatchery Fish Plans

According to well-known author and Miami Herald columnist, Carl Hiaasen, a
lawyer and former lobbyist for the timber industry, who now works as a legal
advisor for the federal government, was the first to come up with the idea
to count hatchery-bred fish when counting populations of endangered salmon
and steelhead (covered in last week's edition of DENlines). The lawyer and
former lobbyist, Mark Rutzick, currently serves as an advisor to the
National Marine Fisheries Service. Learn more.
