LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************

Dear Friends,

Wow ó sorry itís so long since weíve been together. Computer problems coupled to the demands of "real life" have kept us apart but hopefully thatís all behind me now and we can get back to our regular schedule. And what an exciting time to be back together! How about all this news of new John Denver releases?! If that isnít too great for words! I donít know what precipitated this, but all I can say is, "Itís About Time". With any luck, RCA/BMG will promote it to the sky and itíll have great sales and theyíll keep on releasing all sorts of lovely never-before-seen/heard material for us. So I guess that means that itís up to us to "vote with our wallets" and make those discs fly off the shelves.

In other news, weíve already had the Democratic and will soon have the Republican Convention. It seems that many people who have not been really politically active before are getting involved and thatís great to see. I went to a house party for John Kerryís acceptance speech and the mood of the room was very positive. This is shaping up to be an exciting fall election season. But whatever your political leanings, we want to hear from you. If thereís an issue you want to discuss or inform the group about ó and not a particular candidate, please ó then by all means, send it along.

And I hope youíll pardon the propaganda, but The Peace Cloth is now selling our 2004 t-shirt. It is a lovely, exclusive photo of John in concert from the 1970s, on a black tee; a picture of the shirt and all ordering information will be available at our website, www.johndenverpeacecloth.com <http://www.johndenverpeacecloth.com/> , soon. And as always, youíll be able to purchase the shirt at our upcoming tribute event in Aspen in October ó hope to see you there!

My heart to yours,

Ann

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
*********************************************************************

"What I like, and what gives a real sense of humanity, is that everywhere I have traveled and every premiere I have been to in different cities of the world and different countries, people react in the same way to what they see. They laugh at the same places, are scared in the same places, and they cry in the same places. It doesnít matter where you are, the reactions are the same. It just makes you realize that human beings are really fundamentally the same all over the world. This sounds kind of simplistic, but it makes you realize how stupid territorial wars are and religious conflict and everything else. It is such a waste of time. You look at the way people respond to the movies and you realize we are all the same, and it just makes you realize how hopeless and sad and tragic any fighting and warefare is. Everybody should just get on with it ó watch movies, read books, have fun, have friends, go to the beach, go swimming and enjoy life. We are basically all the same. Whatever religion we might believe in and whatever politics we might believe in, we are fundamentally the same people....

"Seeking Grace in Every Step...."

It has been said the last need of man in a hierarchy of needs is to grow spiritually. No where can one experience this better than at the Chuang Yen Monastery (www.baus.org) located in Kent, NY. I know John Denver visited a monastery in the Northeast for meditation and awareness , and I believe this was the place. How fitting the Prophet of the ë70's would seek peace at the prophet Buddha's temple! So I visited the monastery last year and again a few months ago in my quest for renewal and out of a certain sense of curiosity.

The Chuang Yen Monastery, situated on 125 acres and built in 1981, is approached by following the Bodhi Path or Path to Awakening designed for the spiritual journey to enlightenment. It is lined with 18 historic Buddhist disciples reminding one to follow Buddha's teachings. Since this 3-block-long cement walkway was completed this year, it's ribbon-cutting dedication ceremony was held this past May 30th.

This impressive walkway leads to the Great Buddha Hall, housing a 37-foot high seated Buddha statue - the largest one in the Western Hemisphere. Encircling the statue are 10,000 smaller Buddha statues and walls of murals.

The monastery grounds are breathtakingly beautiful, from Kuan-Yin Hall, housing the largest porcelain Bodhisattva (teacher) statue in the world, Five Contemplations Dining Hall, the Thousand Lotus Memorial Terrace comprised of urns artfully arranged in a half-circle, and scenic Seven Jewels Lake graced with swans, stocked with fish, and traversed by footbridges, providing a scenic view of nature and a feeling of serenity. Pagodas and gazebos nestled in the woods are also a must see.

In part, Buddhism embodies the teaching of wisdom, truth, and self-enlightenment which is then taught to others, devoid of universal poisons such as greed. It also imparts that afflictions are inexhaustible, but there are boundless ways to terminate them.. Finally, after perceiving the universe as one, happiness is derived from existing together in harmony.

Didn't John, in his own right, embrace some basic Buddhist principles in his life and impart them to us for self-awareness and to work together to make a better world and future? Didn't he prophesy that without respect and love for others and for all forms of life, our existence would be negatively affected? For example, after protesting against "scars upon the land", he enlightened us about environmental preservation through his music ("Rocky Mountain High"), disdain for universal poisons ("Raven's Child"), belief in the oneness of man ("One World"), achievement of awareness ("Higher Ground"), and an end to the affliction of world hunger, to name a few of his personal tenets.

The study of Buddhism is growing in the U.S., and many people find it's techniques a relevant part of their daily lives. If you are open to enlightenment or just want to spend an unforgettably enjoyable day, drive to the Chuang Yen Monastery. Or you may choose to seek grace by walking in John's footsteps by listening to the message in his music to hear the prophet share "the truth when it is told."

DENlines 8.4.04

Turning its back on decades of sound forest management, the Bush administration is planning on removing protections for the last remaining roadless areas of our national forests. Nearly 60 million acres could be exposed to logging, oil and gas drilling, mining, and road building. September 14 is the deadline to send your comments in opposition to this plan. Please visit our action center and go to alert #322 to take action.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. New Pesticide Rules Threaten Wildlife

The Bush administration has finalized new regulations that cut federal wildlife agencies out of the loop on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) decisions regarding pesticide use ó a move that undermines the Endangered Species Act. Many pesticides pose a distinct threat to endangered species and other animals and plants. For example, the pesticide DDT was largely responsible for the decline of the American bald eagle before the Endangered Species Act and pesticide control laws halted the species' march toward extinction. 3. Olympic Swimmer Supports Defenders

Amanda Beard, the world-record holder in the 200-meter breast stroke, will be swimming for more than herself and her country during this year's Summer Games in Athens. Beard, who has qualified for three individual events, is also an ambassador for dolphins and other wildlife, and has recorded a public service announcement for Defenders that has reached more than 17 million viewers. Be sure to watch this true defender of wildlife as she swims for gold!

4. Defenders Board Member Receives Walt Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund Award

Montana native and Defenders of Wildlife Board Member Ira New Breast was named a Conservation Hero by the Walt Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund for his work with swift foxes. New Breast, the executive director of the Native American Fish and Wildlife Society in Denver, Colorado, and the former director of the Blackfeet Reservation Fish & Wildlife Department, was instrumental to Defenders' efforts to reintroduce a self-sustaining swift fox population on the Blackfeet Reservation ó a true wildlife conservation success story. New Breast is one of five global award winners this year.

5. More Questions Raised About Ethics Violations of Steven Griles

A Defenders Freedom of Information Act lawsuit has generated the release of agency documents that raise more questions about the ethics compliance of Deputy Secretary of the Interior, J. Steven Griles. Griles, a former lobbyist who represented energy and mining companies, has been criticized for meetings that he conducted with past clients who were seeking changes to federal regulations. Griles was never cleared of charges by Interior Department investigators or Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton, and new documents obtained by Defenders shed even more light on several potentially unlawful conflicts of interest and incidences of public influence for private gain. Briefing for the case in a federal court in the District of Columbia continues into the fall.
