LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************
Dear Friends,
Thanks to everyone for sending in the great stuff for Earth Day. And please keep 'em coming in for next month -- we'd all love to hear how your projects turned out. Also, don't forget that if you have a story about your involvement with the Peace Cloth, we're still collecting them for our 5th anniversary newsletter.
Here in my part of the northeast, you'd never know it's actually, officially spring. The temperatures haven't gone higher than 50, with no real appearance of spring flowers yet. Here's hoping for a beautiful season of renewal soon!
My heart to yours,
Ann

From Jim & Kathy Lewis (Clown02@concentric.net)
Hi IAT,
I have a little thing I do each Earth Day. It isn't much, but if we could get a lot of our friends to do it too, it would mean quite a bit to help the environment. And it's very easy to do.
What I do is pick a day, if the actual Earth Day isn't a good day to do this. And on that day, I turn off all electric/gas/propane/oil devices I can. Then I spend the day reading, or working by candle lilght. Each year I try to do it longer than the year before. Last year, I did it the entire day! If we all could do it, just imagine how much we could save for the environment! I hope this note gets a lot of positive feedback and we actually can make a dent in the use of fossil fuels that we consume each day without realizing it. It's only 1 day, so give it a try!
Take gentle care,
Kathy Lewis

From Sherry Cook <backhomagain@yahoo.com>
Hello friends!
Did you ever have a simple idea just hit you right out of the blue?! Last night while discussing my Mary Kay business, a realization hit me just like that! For over a year now, I have been a Mary Kay consultant, but it has been one part of my life and carrying on John Denver's legacy has been another. The two didn't seem to harmonize, but with this idea, they are! I have a website (www.MaryKay.com/scook2426). If you will visit my website and place an order, I will donate a portion of my proceeds to Windstar. That way, whatever you purchase will help my business grow, and more importantly to me, Windstar grow!
And don't think you guys are left out, either...no sir! Every guy who tries the shave cream LOVES it! Also, there are several men's colognes that are wonderful...don't forget the special lady in your life! Everyone should treat themselves to Satin Hands! It's incredible! I hope you will "come see me" on my website!
Take care, everybody, and have a great day!
Thank you!
Peace and joy,
Sherry :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Breaking News: Vote Begins Showdown on Arctic Refuge Drilling
The Senate narrowly rejected, by a margin of 49-51, an attempt to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling as part of the larger budget resolution. Conservationists consider this a tough setback, but believe the loss to be just the first round in a longer effort that begins today. There remain many openings for those who care about the Arctic refuge to take action to protect one of the last remaining pristine wilderness areas in the world. Please stay tuned for future actions that you can take to save this great place. Visit www.savearcticrefuge.org for more information and to see how your senator voted.
2. Mercury Study Finds Hot Spots, Feds Analysis Flawed
A recent study funded by the federal Department of Agriculture shows that mercury contamination in many locations is worse than scientists originally believed and the toxic metal is increasingly finding its way into forests and the wildlife that depend on them. The study found nine regional "hot spots" -- from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia -- where elevated mercury levels appeared in wildlife. News of the study came out just days after a report released by Government Accountability Office that charges that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency failed to quantify the public health benefits related to lower mercury emissions and did not fully disclose its plans for regulating mercury. Conservationists charge that the EPA's recently released mercury proposals will lead to more hot spots like those discussed in the research mentioned above.
3. News From the Alaska Board of Game Meeting
Thanks to an outpouring of more than 6,000 comments from Defenders of Wildlife members, the Alaska Board of Game recently decided against opening up the world-famous McNeil River Bear Sanctuary and bordering state game refuge to brown bear trophy hunting. In addition, they excluded federal park and refuge lands from an aerial wolf killing program in interior Alaska. Unfortunately, they also expanded aerial and same-day wolf killing in one area, and increased the areas where hunters can use snowmobiles to pursue and kill wolves. Please visit www.savealaskawolves.org to help with our continued efforts to stop aerial wolf killing, and listen to our weekly audio updates on what's happening in Alaska.
4. Help Stop Alaska Wolf Slaughter
Nearly 400 wolves have been killed in Alaska under the barbaric aerial gunning program that began in 2003. Wolves can be gunned down from airplanes, or run to exhaustion and then shot point blank. The Alaska Board of Game has approved the destruction of up to 1,400 wolves. This will be the greatest wolf massacre in half a century. Please make whatever tax-deductible contribution you can today to help us stop this slaughter. For a gift of $25 or more, we'll send you a plush wolf toy to recognize your support.
5. 'Clear Skies' Fails, Feds Move Forward with New Regulations
The Bush administration's plan to weaken the Clean Air Act, cynically called the "Clear Skies" initiative, failed to clear a key Senate committee as it was deadlocked in a 9-9 tie after moderate Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee (Rhode Island) and independent Jim Jeffords (Vermont) joined all committee Democrats to block the plan on March 9. Following the defeat, the Bush White House quickly finalized a regulatory proposal, called the Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR), which shares some of the same goals as the "Clear Skies" legislation. Conservationists consider the CAIR rule to be less damaging than "Clear Skies," but point out that the CAIR rule should be stronger, as full enforcement of the Clean Air Act would result in significantly greater and faster pollution reductions from the oldest and dirtiest power plants.
6. First Wolf Killed by Rancher Under New Federal Guidelines
An Idaho rancher became the first to kill a wolf under the new federal guidelines that relax control of wolf management and weaken the restrictions under which wolves can be killed by private citizens. The rancher, who claims that two wolves were harassing his cattle, shot the female gray wolf on March 6. Learn more.
7. White House Seeks More Environmental Exemptions for Pentagon
Following its efforts last year to obtain exemptions for the Pentagon from laws that protect endangered land and sea animals, the White House is now seeking more changes that will undermine environmental laws when it comes to military operations. The plans, issued in a memo in early March, call for exemptions for the Pentagon from the Clean Air Act, the Superfund law and the Solid Waste Disposal Act. Conservationists question the necessity and the precedent of allowing the military to be above the laws of the land.
DENlines is a biweekly update of Defenders of Wildlife, a leading national conservation organization recognized as one of the nation's most progressive advocates for wildlife and its habitat. It is known for its effective leadership on endangered species issues, particularly predators such as brown bears and gray wolves. Defenders also advocates new approaches to wildlife conservation that protect species before they become endangered. Founded in 1947, Defenders is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with more than 480,000 members and supporters.
