LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************

Dear Friends,

Thanks to everyone who sent in reports of their Earth Day events.  And if you haven't had a chance yet to write up an event report, we'd love to have it for next month.  One further reminder -- if you have a story about your involvement with the Peace Cloth,  we're still collecting them for our 5th anniversary newsletter.

Hope you all are enjoying a wonderful spring!

My heart to yours,
Ann

My question is, will our society, our modern society, realize the value of keeping such an area, at least, empty of technology and full of life"

From E Pinney [evepin@colorado.net]

It's springtime again in the Rockies!  Hope everyone had a nice, and safe, winter season.  Now that the snow is melting in the high county, I thought it might be time to schedule another high country JD Highway Cleanup and BBQ!  We won't be joining the whole Eagle county event this year (I'll be out of town, and unable to coordinate anything).  However, we'll be joining the Antlers cleanup day, along with ECO Trails, on JUNE 11th.

So save the date, if you can!  SATURDAY, JUNE 11th.

John Adams will be sharing his music with us, at the Antlers BBQ after the cleanup.  Rob is again generously offering $50 a night room rates for those coming from out of town - come and enjoy a weekend in Vail!

It sure would be nice to see everyone again - and we hope you can join us!  Please let me know your plans, so I can get a head count - the BBQ will be catered! nice!

Thanks!  Hope you can make it.....

All the best,

Evelyn

Westchester Earth Day Celebration
by Carole Romanowski- whispjesse@aol.com

I read recently in my local newspaper, "The Journal News", about an Earth Day Celebration at the Kensico Dam Plaza - about a half hour from my house - here in New York State. The celebration was part of a "Pitchin for Parks" day, during which thousands of resident volunteers cleaned up county parks and nature reserves. Mr. Joe Stout, Westchester County's Commissioner of Parks, hailed the importance of conservation and recycling to improve the environment.

Volunteers cut vines growing  around trees, starving them of sunlight and causing their branches to break, according to research done by the Bronx River Conservancy. The Planning Department also taught residents about the monitoring of streams for water quality. They worked to recruit volunteers who would collect physical, chemical and biological data for stream sites throughout the county to insure safe drinking water.

Children were informed of the importance of recycling, and the school that collected the most paper, glass, aluminum and cardboard within the past year was honored with a county award to encourage environmentalism in our youth for the future. What a great idea! Plus the school was from my area!

I know John Denver was very proud of these volunteers - adults and youths alike.  Kudos to them all! After reading this article, I learned more about how to further preserve the environment and put this knowledge into practice through strength in numbers with community action.

From Georgiann McDaniel (RockyMtnHaven1@msn.com):

The newly formed group for the Western Slope of Colorado, Peaceful Spirit Windstar Connection, held it's first event. On Saturday, April 23, 2005, we held a cleanup of the John Denver Sanctuary in Aspen. Lance Edinger played guitar and sang songs to serenade the 11 volunteers who were able to fill 12 bags of trash. Windstar was represented by Harlean Peterson, who handed out information about the upcoming Symposium, Earth Camp and Windstar, along with refreshments. Jennifer Moore had put together information that was also handed out about the local places for recycling and consignment shops. It was one of those perfect John Denver Days, beautiful blue Colorado skies and fluffy white clouds and lemonade and cookies for the volunteers. And the Earth was much cleaner in only an hour and a half. Thanks to everyone involved for your support. Anyone wishing information about our group can contact: Georgiann McDaniel at RockyMtnHaven1@msn.com

From Joan Kurtz (rangerfan@hotmail.com):

Here at my college (800 students), I put up a poster of the earth with a sign over it "Lend the Earth a Hand." Then I gave out "hands" (pieces of paper in the shape of hands) where students/faculty, etc. would write their names and then add their suggestionsas how to help our poor planet -- recycle, car pool, pick up trash, etc. I then attached the hands around the earth so it looks like our "hands" are holding her up.

From Sherry Cook <backhomagain@yahoo.com>

Hello friends!

Did you ever have a simple idea just hit you right out of the blue?!  Last night while discussing my Mary Kay business, a realization hit me just like that! For over a year now, I have been a Mary Kay consultant, but it has been one part of my life and carrying on John Denver's legacy has been another. The two didn't seem to harmonize, but with this idea, they are! I have a website (www.MaryKay.com/scook2426). If you will visit my website and place an order, I will donate a portion of my proceeds to Windstar. That way, whatever you purchase will help my business grow, and more importantly to me, Windstar grow!

And don't think you guys are left out, either...no sir! Every guy who tries the shave cream LOVES it! Also, there are several men's colognes that are wonderful...don't forget the special lady in your life! Everyone should treat themselves to Satin Hands! It's incredible! I hope you will "come see me" on my website!

Take care, everybody, and have a great day!
Thank you!

Peace and joy,
Sherry :)

1. Defenders Named One of America's 100 Best by Reader's Digest

As part of its annual "America's 100 Best" awards, Reader's Digest has named Defenders of Wildlife the "best wildlife charity" to commend the organization's innovative programs. Visit the Reader's Digest "America's 100 Best" website and find the link on the interactive map for Washington, DC, to see the group's award listing.

2. House Approves Arctic Refuge Drilling in Pork-Barrel Laden Energy Bill

On the eve of the 35th anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a pork-barrel energy bill that permits drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The bill, passed on April 21, has been slammed by the press and environmentalists as being chock-full of corporate welfare for the fossil fuel energy industry at a time when their profits are soaring. Even the Bush administration, generally no friend to the environment, is questioning the need for the coal, oil and gas industry subsidies.

3. Save Money on Your Taxes Through Our Free Estate Planning Phone Seminar!

Join us by phone to learn ways you can save money on taxes while leaving a legacy to save wildlife and its habitat for future generations. On Wednesday, May 4, from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Eastern time, and Thursday, May 5, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Eastern time, Defenders will host a free phone seminar: Keeping Track of Changes in Income Tax Planning and Charitable Gift Planning. Join nationally recognized speaker Dr. Alice Pinsley for an informative 90-minute update. At the conclusion, Defenders President Rodger Schlickeisen will review the challenges America's wildlife face today, including aerial gunning of wolves in Alaska and threats from corporate special interests. Feel free to join us for part of or the whole seminar.

4. Alaska Aerial Gunning Update

At press time, 270 wolves have been killed this season by aerial gunners in Alaska. The aerial gunning season ends April 30. Hundreds of wolves are slated to be killed by hunters using aircraft in the next few years. Learn more about aerial wolf killing by visiting www.savealaskawolves.org and listening to audio updates from Defenders' Alaska office.

5. Furniture Makers Warned About Illegal Mahogany Logging

On the eve of the world's largest furniture show, Defenders of Wildlife and the Natural Resources Defense Council called on furniture makers to stop using illegally logged South American mahogany. Nearly all of Peru's big leaf mahogany exports are logged illegally, and 80 percent of the contraband ends up in the United States. Top-name companies that have acknowledged using South American mahogany include Stickley, Furniture Brands International (makers of Broyhill, Drexel Heritage, Henredon and Thomasville), Henkel-Harris and Hekman. Other companies contacted by the groups, including Williams-Sonoma—owners of Pottery Barn—said they were unaware of the source of their mahogany. Learn more.
