LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************

Dear Friends,

After a long, hot summer, I'm betting that many of you are looking forward to the cool, crisp days of Autumn – I know I am.  For those planning on spending some time in Aspen this fall, I hope you'll consider attending the Windstar symposium or joining us for the festivities during John Denver Weekend.  We have a place that needs your face!  Seriously, it's all of you who make our events wonderful – we couldn't do it without your participation.  So thank you in advance.

I'm in the process of editing the 5th anniversary newsletter for the Peace Cloth (which I promise will be available shortly), and it just thrills me to read your memories about the presence of the Cloth in your lives.  Five years.  Hard to believe.  For me, the Cloth is a tangible reminder of my commitment to John and his legacy, one that I try to live up to every day.  It's so gratifying to hear that it has been a meaningful experience for you and I hope that continues.  C'mon over to our website at www.johndenverpeacecloth.com, where new things are always happening.  Only just this morning, someone called about getting a panel for an event in early November – and every time that happens, John lives again.

So I hope you all had a good summer and that we'll be seeing you in Aspen this October.

My heart to yours,
Ann

President Lyndon B. Johnson, upon signing of the Wilderness Act, 1964:

"If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it."

The Green Gospel
(by Carole Romanowski - whispjesse@aol.com)

I recently read in my local newspaper, The Journal News, about a growing philosophy connecting spirituality with environmentalism.  This shift in human consciousness linking the divine with nature existed years ago but it seems it is gaining again in momentum, at least here in N.Y. State among local activists.

Henry David Thoreau, in 1854, in his book "Walden" expressed spiritual reflections about the place of nature in life. Later on, in 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated, local environmentalists in the N.Y. Hudson Valley area felt environmentalism  to be based on the conviction that the roots of any environmental  crisis are both philosophical and spiritual.

Our culture is making a connection with nature that runs deeper than protecting wildlife from destruction, water from pollution, and suburbs from "scars upon the land." This growing philosophy, called the Green Gospel, is as much about the scientific and economic as it is about the spiritual and about values.

This year, environmental attorney Robt. F. Kennedy, Jr. from Mount Kisco, N.Y. related "We need to love nature and spend time in it, because it is through His creation that the Creator communicates to us his grace and joy. People have always found their values and elevated their values in wilderness. When we cut ourselves off from nature, we cut ourselves off from the source of our values and, ultimately, we lose our humanity."

In addition, Daniel Martin who is a resident of Cross River, N.Y. and views hawks flying and nature at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation relates "There is an expansion of my soul, and expansion of my sense of self." He's "high" on the beauty of nature, like John Denver, and has reverence for nature and a zest for preserving the "wild country." It's almost religious! Beth Herr, senior curator of the Ward Reservation, states "My energy is part of the whole system(nature) and that is as close as I'll get to religion."

Also, the Hudson River activist John Cronin, who resides in Cold Spring, N.Y. tells us " Environmentalism and spirituality at their best are inseparable because both have the same capacity to make a person feel a connection to something larger."

Furthermore, Allen Hershkowitz, Lewisboro Town Board member and  senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council here in N.Y. states "In my religion, there is enormous literature underscoring the obligations we have to protect all of God's species, The more vulnerable the species, the greater our obligation. We are closer to God when we protect nature."

In closing, as a result of the Green Gospel, many N.Y. state  residents are willing to pay more taxes to preserve open space, and the growth of green businesses such as nurseries and stables has increased greatly since 1994. In my opinion, these Green Gospel devotees discovered, a little later on, what John Denver, in "Rocky Mountain High", "To the Wild Country",  to name a few of his songs, knew all along - nature gives one a sense of inner peace that is essential for introspection and therefore spiritual development to grow in knowledge and in love to benefit all mankind.

"I Am the Eagle....."
(by Carole Romanowski - whispjesse@aol.com)

I took wing above the Rockies
Where peace and solitude abound.
I grew sage in self-discovery
Learned my destiny to be on higher ground.

So I journeyed over far and foreign lands
Observed the hungry, the sick, the needy.
I pledged to alter their helpless plight
And to efface the insult of the greedy.

And so with love and outstretched talons
I alighted in these oppressed lands
To try to repair the ailing Universe
From lofty mountains tops to desert sands.

But then one fateful day too soon
I soared above a sunlit shore
Unaware of my destiny that day
...............And then I flew no more.

Now I hover in cosmic shadows
Leaving my example to carry on.
Remember me, I lived among you once
"I am the eagle......",.you called me John.

Frost, Poe.....and John
(by Carole Romanowski - whispjesse@aol.com)

On a recent trip to Philadelphia this summer, I had occasion to tour the home of the poet, Edgar Allen Poe. At the end of the tour, the curator asked me what prompted me to visit this historic landmark. I answered I always loved poetry and was inspired by the works of Robert Frost and Edgar Allen Poe to write poems in high school. But then, as with everyone, life happens and time does not allow for simple pleasures.

However, I related that much later in my life the passing  of the musical poet John Denver and the powerful messages embedded in his  compositions profoundly influenced me to honor him, in one regard, through my poetry and what I'm able to do to carry on his legacy.

At the mention of John's name,  the curator's eyes grew bright! He shared with me he always loved John Denver's music and listened to his parents play his songs while growing up. His favorite selection was "Rhymes and Reasons", and he still plays the song on his guitar today!

However, after moving out on his own when older, he lost touch with the rest of John's musical repertoire. This was my opportunity to inform him of John's life and universal message, his mentorship in my life, his powerful influence on my writing of poetry about this man, and the hundreds of songs by John the curator has yet to discover, learn from and enjoy!

Since the tour was ended, I left the curator on his way to a music store to purchase any CD's and cassettes of John Denver's music he could find to enrich his own life. And I left the Poe estate feeling so empowered to have returned a friend of John's back to the fold! I know Edgar Allen Poe will understand!!

Western Pennsylvania Mountain High
by Donna Pinto (lemurlady@comcast.net)

August 13th’s Spirit Windstar Connection’s "Second Annual Rocky Mountain High in the Alleghenies, A Tribute to John Denver" concert was wonderful! Thanks to the Army Corps of Engineers, it was again located at the beautiful Seven Points Amphitheater at Raystown Lake in Hesston, PA.

We had an exhibition room with videos playing all afternoon, WolfPup was there with her WildLife Creations and beautiful displays had lots of information available about Windstar and John Denver. Plus, the Peace Cloth was also "on tour" at the event. Spirit member Jrspike is quite an artist and did up a beautiful new purple and blue mountain scene panel for our Connection... she "planted" Aspen leaves on the grassy field, too, so each Spirit member could sign it. What an outstanding job!

Despite no fire raining in the sky (at least not that we could see because of the clouds) and except for the horrible heat, we had a terrific day 'cause there was no rain! Oh, the music was kind of good, too!!!

The evening concert was just outstanding! How could it be anything else with guys as talented as Tim Dabbs, Mark Cormican, and Chris Westfall? By the way, Mark's website recently changed to www.markcormicanmusic.com. Lots of folks asked about Tim’s "Safely Home" song and he’s putting it on his next CD. Mark and Tim have both already volunteered for the Third Annual Rocky Mountain High in the Alleghenies so we’ll keep you posted!!!

As always, lots of old friends were there and new ones were made... special thanks to the rangers, Spirit Connection, and JD for helping to make it all happen. Music and the mountains, how could it go wrong?

If you have any pictures or comments about the event, please send them in to lemurlady@comcast.net or spiritwsconnections@yahoo.com

"World Game"
(by Carole Romanowski - whispjesse@ aol.com)

I came across the following article recently & wanted to share it with you. It is somewhat enlightening and shocking at the same time. In addition it expresses the need to count our blessings, but perhaps if we follow John Denver's legacy and teachings, we can go one step further & do what we can to adjust the percentages toward the positive end of the spectrum - but only if we "play in the world game."

On Appreciation

Think of it this way. If you live in a good home, have plenty to eat and can read, you are a member of a very select group.

And if you have a good house, food, can read and have a computer, you are among the very elite.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ... you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

If you can attend a church meeting without  fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death.. .you are fortunate, more than three billion people in the world can’t.

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep. ..you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace.. .you are among the top 3% of the world’s wealthy.

If your parents are still alive and still married.., you are very rare, even in the United States.

If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful... you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.

If you can hold someone’s hand, hug them or even touch them on shoulder ... you are blessed because you can offer healing touch.

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

Appreciate what you have, count your blessings!

From Sherry Cook <backhomagain@yahoo.com>

Hello friends!

Did you ever have a simple idea just hit you right out of the blue?!  Last night while discussing my Mary Kay business, a realization hit me just like that! For over a year now, I have been a Mary Kay consultant, but it has been one part of my life and carrying on John Denver's legacy has been another. The two didn't seem to harmonize, but with this idea, they are! I have a website (www.MaryKay.com/scook2426). If you will visit my website and place an order, I will donate a portion of my proceeds to Windstar. That way, whatever you purchase will help my business grow, and more importantly to me, Windstar grow!

And don't think you guys are left out, either...no sir! Every guy who tries the shave cream LOVES it! Also, there are several men's colognes that are wonderful...don't forget the special lady in your life! Everyone should treat themselves to Satin Hands! It's incredible! I hope you will "come see me" on my website!

Take care, everybody, and have a great day!
Thank you!

Peace and joy,
Sherry :)

A Biweekly Update from Defenders of Wildlife: Working to Save Wildlife and Wild Lands

Wildlife Win in Transportation Bill
Congress Passes Pork-Barrel Energy Bill
Conservationists Petition to Protect Declining Shorebird
Early Bird Wildlife Gift Adoptions
Campaign to Save Arctic Refuge Continues
Central American Trade Pact Bad for Wildlife
Australia's Koalas Need Your Help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Wildlife Win in Transportation Bill

Although roads and highways are never good for the environment, this time -- thanks largely to Defenders' hard work -- the federal transportation bill has historic provisions that will benefit America's wildlife. Defenders successfully lobbied to include wildlife for the first time when federal transportation dollars are spent. Although the bill also includes some bad environmental proposals, builders will at least have to consider wildlife when building new roads and highways. Thanks to all our members who sent letters, faxes and e-mails to support wildlife in the bill!

2. Congress Passes Pork-Barrel Energy Bill

Defenders worked hard to fight it, but the U.S. Congress still passed a multibillion-dollar energy bill that provides some funding for renewable energy, but is mostly full of pork-barrel projects for oil, gas and coal companies feeding at the federal trough. Even the Bush administration objected to some of the corporate welfare granted to the oil and gas industries by leading Republicans in Congress. Sadly, the bill will do nearly nothing to wean us off of foreign oil, nor greatly increase our use of renewables. Additionally, it will also likely expose the nation's coasts to more oil exploration and drilling.

3. Conservationists Petition to Protect Declining Shorebird

Defenders and other conservation groups have responded to an 80 percent decline in the population of a subspecies of the red knot by petitioning the federal government to emergency list the shorebird under the Endangered Species Act. The bird makes an 18,000-mile roundtrip journey each year from its winter home at the tip of South America to the Arctic. But one of their few stops, on the Delaware Bay, has lost much of its horseshoe crab population in recent years -- the eggs of which provide vital food for the birds. The red knot once numbered more than 100,000, but now count 17,000. If nothing is done to ensure their survival, recent scientific models predict extinction as early as 2010. Learn more.

4. Early Bird Wildlife Gift Adoptions

Help save wildlife and 10 percent on your holiday gift shopping through our Early Bird adoption offer. Simply log onto www.wildlifeadoption.org to adopt for that special someone, a wolf, tiger, sea otter, polar bear, snowy owl (for those Harry Potter fans) or other precious animal in need of protection. You can also call 1-800-385-9712. With each gift adoption, Defenders will send (free shipping) your gift recipient a plush animal and certificate of adoption to arrive in time for the holidays. Holiday gift adoptions are a wonderful way to pass on the legacy of conservation to family and friends. Enter code DEN10 on your adoption order form to receive your special 10 percent savings.

5. Campaign to Save Arctic Refuge Continues

It's crucial that the public realize that the fight to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil and gas drilling is not over. Please visit and send friends to Defenders' Web site www.savearcticrefuge.org to take action to save one of America's last and greatest truly wild places.

6. Central American Trade Pact Bad for Wildlife

In a last-minute maneuver, the Bush administration successfully pushed the House of Representatives to pass by a tiny margin the Central American Free Trade Agreement. Experts at Defenders say the agreement has almost no protections for the environment or wildlife. We might have defeated CAFTA if Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), who is facing ethics violations allegations, hadn't pulled another of his anti-democratic maneuvers and kept the vote open long past the deadline in order to essentially buy additional votes with legislative and funding favors. Learn more.

7.  Australia's Koalas Need Your Help

Australia's koalas are in trouble and they need your help. In some areas, 90 percent of koala habitat has been destroyed by development. The animals could be gone altogether from the east coast of Australia in as few as 15 years. An Australian conservation organization is calling for the Australian government to protect the koala under their endangered species law. Visit www.savethekoala.com to learn more and take action to support the threatened koalas.

DENlines is a biweekly update of Defenders of Wildlife, a leading national conservation organization recognized as one of the nation's most progressive advocates for wildlife and its habitat. It is known for its effective leadership on endangered species issues, particularly predators such as brown bears and gray wolves. Defenders also advocates new approaches to wildlife conservation that protect species before they become endangered. Founded in 1947, Defenders is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with more than 480,000 members and supporters.
