LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************

Summer is almost gone and Autumn is just about upon us.  Apologies for getting this to you late – I didn’t anticipate losing the last six months of email, so I hope that everyone who sent something for this issue has sent it again.  If you haven’t had a chance to send it again, and still want to share, there’s always next time.  And of course, thanks to everyone for your contribution, whether you see it in this newsletter or not.  We couldn’t be IAT without all of you.

I wanted to direct your attention to the quote we have this month – it is very much in keeping with our theme of memorable JD events, and how much these gatherings serve to keep our flames burning to nurture and protect John’s legacy.  Many of us have created what will be lifelong friendships as a result of attending a tribute concert or event; one of the most important relationships in my life began as just a voice on the other end of the telephone, asking if I would support her project with a blurb in the IAT newsletter.  Eight years later, she is my best friend and the person I attribute to keeping my own flame kindled when it seems almost impossible to go on.

John’s passing had a purpose in bringing us all together.  Let us use that community to create a world of peace, that fulfills the lives of everyone.  It’s up to us.

Hope to see many of you in Aspen!

My heart to yours,
Ann

Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by an encounter with another human being. Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light."

LETTERS & POEMS

From Nancy Huffman of the Windstar Spirit Connection (nancye@hotmail.com)

Tribute to John Denver at Raystown Lake

It was a beautiful balmy evening high up in the Alleghenies and the skies were more clear this year than ever. As the folks started filtering in we knew this year would be special. We had the privilege of listening to the music of Chris Westfall and The Friends with you Band  on this special night.  As always the music was outstanding! I have to admit that "The  Eagle and the Hawk" was my favorite.  The crowd was very receptive and generous with praise. Several folks told us they had been coming each year and were very glad this concert took place so close to their home.

The members of Spirit Connections were also able to gather and discuss the upcoming
trip to Aspen where we are helping with the Pine Creek Cookhouse even , "Alaska, American Child".   This will be the first year the entire group has traveled there together and we are especially thrilled to be a part of this wonderful and worthwhile cause.

Thank you to everyone who travelled to Raystown Lake for the show and as always thak you for your continuing support.

A special Thank you to Chris Westfall and all the guys in The Friends with You Band!!!

See you in Aspen!!!

Peace  and blessings......... all the girls from  Spirit Connections

Memories of JD Commemorations Past
================================

Pier 63 Maritime - June 27, 1998
(by Carole Romanowski - whispjesse@aol.com)

A commemorative event I participated in within the last 10 years was a free John Denver Tribute on June 27th, 1998 at Pier 63 Maritime near the Hudson River in New York City. Donations contributed at this event went into a new fund, at that time, set up in John's honor by the NY Windstar Connection. Items to buy for this fund raising were set up at a long table on the pier - I bought a JD teddy bear wearing a shirt stating "YOU Can Make A Difference" and it's still sitting on a chair in my bedroom today!

A covered portion of the pier jutted out into the river as the "stage", and nearby was a boat, The Frying Pan, docked for backup staging in case of rain.

As we watched ships sailing , Max Langstaff, a close friend of John and creator and executive producer of "The Wildlife Concert" double CD started the tribute as the keynote speaker. Then Greg Short and recording producer Howard Messenger introduced their new tribute CD "Dear John". Donna Lipman and her trio sang "It's About Time", and folk duo "Side by Side", along with Pete and Kim Baker singing "Eagle and the Hawk," and others comprised the talent portion of the JD tribute.

Bobbie Johnson ("For Baby, For Bobbie") spoke about her first love, John Denver,  broke down in tears!  One of the highlights of the day for me was Bobbie signing her autograph for me while I held her hat down on this cloudy and breezy summer day! She wrote "To Carole - On a beautiful, windy day. Walk in peace. Bobbie." Bobbie was so friendly and left a scapbook displaying her time spent with John in earlier years. I remember laughing when I saw a pipe cleaner ring scotch taped on one page from John to Bobbie and he wrote "This will have to do 'til something better comes along."!

It was such a comfort to be a part of this JD tribute so soon after John left us and to network with other fans, help fund Windstar in John's name, and meet Bobbie whom John loved when he was first starting out in the world and was trying to find his place with his music.

After I left the tribute, I found the Hunger Project site not too far from the Pier, but being a Saturday, it was closed. I would later honor John with the Project through cybercookbooks, etc. At that time, that was one way I tried to "...make a difference." Such a precious memory! Such a precious John!

I have been very fortunate in being able to attend the events in Aspen each year since 1998.  Of course, I will be there again this year to commemorate the 10th anniversary.

Near and dear to my heart are the friendships that have been formed there over the past 9 yrs.

It’s still amazing to me that you can begin chatting with JD folks on a group site or through phone calls and wind up being lifelong friends out of that!

We all share something very special....and memories that will last a lifetime!

Reflections of John
(by Carole Romanowski - whispjesse@aol.com)

I was sighted and yet blind
''Til I heard the news broadcast.
An angel knelt and you flew Home
Life as I knew it was now past.

Your music touched me through the years
You filled me with a need now grown
And through my tears I regained strength
And learned of love I'd never known.

For you sent breezes to kiss my cheek
Using your own holistic style
And with an artist's skillful brush
Painted my pain the color of smiles.

You showed me clouds I'd never seen
And flowing rivers, mountains nigh
You lifted blinders on my being
My senses fill with nature's high.

Because of you I gained compassion
For brotherhood and creatures wild
You blessed me with need to discover
Bestowed the wonder of a child.

Your soul touched mine in these past years
You own my love, all of my heart
The one destined to break in two
When angels deemed you would depart.

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS

{This isn’t exactly Environmental News this time, but human rights and hunger, two causes that are also near and dear to our hearts – AS}

"African Sunrise"
(by Carole Romanowski - whispjesse@aol.com)

In the mid-80's, John Denver made his first trip to Africa, traveling with a delegation from the Hunger Project. He heard one night while sleeping in the village of Burkins Faso babies crying from the pain of malnutrition, knowing they would die. Their parents could do nothing to save them. He and the African chief  there felt what was needed from the West was a helping hand. This heartbreaking experience prompted John to write his song "African Sunrise."

For the last four years this situation still exists - along with calculated displacement of the people, rape, and mass slaughter of innocents in Darfur. At least 400,000 people have been killed by rebel groups, over 2.5  million innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homes and now live in displaced- persons & refugee camps in Sudan, and over 3.5 million people are completely reliant on international aid for survival.

In August 2006, the UN's top humanitarian official Jan Egeland state the situation in Darfur is "catastrophic."

The Save Darfur Coalition (www.SavDarfur.org) needs help to raise public awareness by increasing pressure on our government, the UN and leaders around the world to act now to save the 2.5 million people whose lives are threatened. I am a member of this organization and urge you to join to help stop the genocide there. The coalition desperately needs your help to raise public awareness  through the media, public education, targeted coalition building and grassroots mobilization - and you can aid them in accomplishing this. It doesn't take up a lot of your time & feels so rewarding knowing you're joining with others  to make a difference.  Please visit the SaveDarfur website and learn more. The Coalition is located at 2120 L Street, NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC 20037.

Together let's stop the "sound of hungry babies crying" and  wish for  "...rain to wash away their tears" and join "with one who will be our brother." It's time is long overdue. Thanks for listening.

Child Mortality at Record Low; Further Drop Seen

By DONALD G. McNEIL Jr.
The New York Times
Published: September 13, 2007

For the first time since record keeping began in 1960, the number of deaths of young children around the world has fallen below 10 million a year, according to figures from the United Nations Children’s Fund being released today.

This public health triumph has arisen, Unicef officials said, partly from campaigns against measles, malaria and bottle-feeding, and partly from improvements in the economies of most of the world outside Africa.

The estimated drop, to 9.7 million deaths of children under 5, “is a historic moment,” said Ann M. Veneman, Unicef’s executive director, noting that it shows progress toward the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of cutting the rate of infant mortality in 1990 by two-thirds by 2015. “But there is no room for complacency. Most of these deaths are preventable, and the solutions are tried and tested.”

Interestingly, Unicef officials said, the new estimate comes from household surveys done in 2005 or earlier, so they barely reflect the huge influx of money that has poured into third world health in the last few years from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; the Gates Foundation; and the Bush administration’s twin programs to fight AIDS and malaria. For that reason, the next five-year survey should show even greater improvement, they said.

“We feel we’re at a tipping point now,” said Dr. Peter Salama, Unicef’s chief medical officer. “In a few years’ time, it will all translate into a very exciting drop.”

The most important advances, Unicef said, included these:

¶Measles deaths have dropped 60 percent since 1999, thanks to vaccination drives.

¶More women are breast-feeding rather than mixing formula or cereal with dirty water.

¶More babies are sleeping under mosquito nets.

¶More are getting Vitamin A drops.

In 1960, about 20 million children died annually, but the drop since then has been steeper than 50 percent because the world population has grown. If babies were still dying at 1960 rates, 25 million would die this year.

There are still wide disparities. The highest rates of child mortality are found in West and Central Africa, where more than 150 of every 1,000 children born will die before age 5. In the wealthy countries of North America, Western Europe and Japan, the average is about six.

The most rapid progress has been made in Latin America and the Caribbean, in Central and Eastern Europe, and in East Asia and the Pacific.

Despite the improvement, two sets of countries have worsened, Unicef said: those in southern Africa that have been hit hardest by AIDS, and those that have been at war recently, like Congo and Sierra Leone.

The improving economies of India and China have helped pull world figures upward. More girls are getting education and jobs, they marry later and they have fewer children, more of whom survive.

Also, because malnutrition is an underlying factor in 53 percent of all child deaths, anything that feeds children — whether that means large-scale aid during famines or simply better seeds and fertilizer — reduces deaths.

Among countries that made particularly rapid progress since 2000 are the Dominican Republic, Vietnam and Morocco, which all cut child deaths by more than one-third.

Madagascar cut its deaths by 41 percent despite going to the brink of civil war in 2002, and São Tomé and Principe managed to cut its deaths by 48 percent.

Domingos Ferreira, a minister counselor at São Tomé and Principe’s mission to the United Nations, was pleasantly surprised to learn that his country — two islands in the crook of West Africa — had bested the world.

He guessed that credit was due to a national antimalaria campaign that had drained swamps, sprayed houses and provided mosquito nets. “Malaria used to be the first source of killing in our lives,” he said. “And now I hear that the hospital beds on Principe are empty for the first time.”

In Madagascar, Dr. Salama said, the difference was Vitamin A drops, which drastically reduce the chances that a child will die of measles, diarrhea or malaria.

In general, Ms. Veneman said, the countries that did best concentrated on extending simple measures to rural areas, and focusing on inexpensive prevention rather than expensive care.

Ethiopia, many of whose doctors and nurses emigrate, trained 30,000 community health workers for tasks like weighing babies, advising on breast-feeding, giving shots, testing for malaria and handing out mosquito nets.

Success, Ms. Veneman said, “is not just linked to money, it’s linked to setting priorities.”
