The Day I First Met You

words and music by Paul Swanton (a.k.a. RkyMtnHi7)

A note from Paul: "A couple of years ago I was working a part-time job as a host for a restaurant. During that time, a new hostess was hired, and I was charged with training her. Her poise, elegance, attractiveness, and maturity led me to believe she was much older than she actually was. I later discovered she was but a senior still in high school. As I drove home late that night, realizing that a relationship with her was not even a possibility, I became wrought with emotion. I pulled into a rest stop along route 3 and parked my car in front of this magnificent forest that seemed darker than the night itself. With a full moon peering over my shoulder and eyes welling up, I wrote "The Day I First Met You"... "

Here in the shade of evening past, a dreamer rests alone;
What fills me so, I want to know, before the morning comes.
Set upon this forest dark, beneath the haloed moonlight,
I find my heart cannot depart with thoughts of you tonight.

What sweeter joy could Heaven bring to cast before my eyes?
The vision of your loveliness no man could just deny;
You fill the senses of my life, it's hard to think it true,
But that is just the way I felt the day I first met you.

Today I soared where eagles dare, high in the clouds;
Swept away by dreams that can't come true;
But in my mind, I'll always find, a place where I can fly
The memory of you -- my endless sky....

I know someday you'll find someone, worthy of your hand;
A man who fills your heart with dreams, like no other can;
And on that day that's sure to come, I know that he will too
Feel the same way that I did, the day I first met you...
the day I first met you.
